Resources & Information based on The Power of E-Portfolios: 3rd ed. by Rob van Nood ISTE 2014 EverNote: Just the Basics Melissa Dyson Please write your first & last name on a sticky note; leave on the desk.

Evernote is designed for each individual to have his or her own account. The advantages of student having an individual EN account are many: privacy, no sharing of accounts, storage of documents/links, portfolio of accomplishments or work under construction, ease of use, and accessibility online ( IOS and Android apps. The disadvantages of individual accounts are that there is “no way to create, distribute or manage individual accounts in a school wide setting.” Excerpt From: Rob van Nood. “The Power of E-Portfolios: 3rd Edition.” iBooks. EverNote is meant to be file sharing & storage of information for later use.

BASICS Internet connection. Free vs Premium: The free online service has monthly usage limitations (currently 60 MB month). “The premium service costs $5 per month or $45 per year, and currently offers 1GB per month. As well as the larger per- month upload limit, the premium service features faster word recognition of images, greater security and text searching within PDF files. All Evernote accounts, both free and premium, have a maximum limit of 100,000 notes and 250 notebooks. Usage: It is easy to keep track of how much storage you are using up by looking at the “storage meter” that is located under settings. Unlike many cloud based storage sites Evernote never sets a cap to your storage. On any given month you might bump up against your storage limit but you know the next month that you will have a whole new 60mb or 1 GB. You really don’t ever have to worry about running out of storage space.

Based on what you have read, any discussion, and your previous knowledge, answer the following question: Why do you think EVERNOTE uses an elephant as it’s icon? Write your explanation on the back of the sticky note.

ing to Evernote: A great way to send information directly into your Evernote account is by . Each account has its own separate address which works with any application that allows sharing by . I have added my Evernote address to my contact list on my iPad, iPhone and computer so it is called up as an option whenever you decide to share by . You create notebooks for all the specific categories you might have or need. You can create up to 250 notebooks in which you store your information. 250 notebooks is the limit for Free &Premium accounts.

“ Notes can contain photographs, tables, audio, web clippings, web links, “to do” checklists, video and text. In addition, on the desktop version, you can attach a variety of documents. When you create or add some new content into Evernote you do so as a note. Notes can only be 25 megabytes for the free version and 50 megabytes for those who want to upgrade to Premium. That means that you have to be thoughtful about adding larger pictures and audio. In general Evernote is not a good place to store video, unless you have really short clips. Stacks are like the cardboard file boxes where you store all your composition notebooks. Stacking is a way to keep similar notebooks together. Stacks become particularly helpful when you begin to create a lot of different notebooks. Perhaps you have created notebooks for each class you are teaching. Those notebooks could all be placed in a stack called “classes”. The stacks bring an additional level of organization to Evernote that is invaluable once you have used it for a while.” Excerpt From: Rob van Nood. “The Power of E-Portfolios: 3rd Edition.” iBooks.
