The Roush Report Track 1, Second Grade January 5, 2015 Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday and a relaxing break! I was very busy over track out with my eldest daughter’s wedding, Christmas, and then moving from our Fuquay home to our new house in Chatham county so I am actually looking forward to getting back to a normal routine! I am so excited to get right back to work where we left off. We will be changing a couple things up a bit as always when we track back in and expectations for work habits and quality of work will rise. Curriculum Corner Math – We are going to finish up working with money and then move on to our Geometry unit. Students will learn how to recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. They will also learn to identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. Reading – Our focus this quarter is back to fiction. Students will Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. We will also learn practice how to Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. Writing – We will be Rehearsing and drafting lots of stories under the influence of an author and learning proofreading skills. Social Studies – We will begin our unit on Wants and Needs. Students will be able give examples of ways in which businesses in the community meet the needs and wants of consumers. Homework We will be returning to a homework format similar to that of the beginning of the year. Students will be recording nightly homework in their agenda’s. My goal after this week will be to give all homework out on Monday and then students will have until Friday to pass it in. I will not collect any homework until Friday. All homework should be neat and organized with the student’s name on it. They will be able to staple it together and pass it in as a packet on Friday. Reading homework will consist of nightly reading for at least 15 min. I am asking parents to sign the log in the front of the agenda to verify that they reading has been completed. Students may complete a reading retelling sheet on a book or chapter that they read and receive extra credit. Retelling sheets can be found online on our class homework page.

Important Dates No School January 19 Science Fair January 6:00 Internet Safety NightFebruary Website Please visit our class website at Contact Information Mrs. Cindee Roush School Telephone: (919) New Behavior System We will begin a new behavior incentive system that will directly correlate with our Social Studies Wants and Needs unit. Students will begin to earn a paycheck each week for performing their class jobs. All jobs receive the same pay each week. Students will have an opportunity to spend some of their paychecks on small prizes or rewards or, save it for another shopping day. Just as in a real world scenario, students will have to pay desk rental and buy classroom items that they need to replace due to loss or misuse. Students will be able to earn bonus money for things such as working “overtime” on assignments, helping others, completing homework, and receiving compliments from other school personal. There will also be fines handed out for not meeting classroom behavior expectations, noise infractions and incomplete assignments. My students loved this last year and really took their jobs and earning money very seriously. If you have any questions about this system please do not hesitate to ask. Items Needed Small prizes for our class store. Crayons Glue Sticks Colored Copy Paper (assorted colors) Plastic Utensils Extra Snack for students who forget to bring a snack
