Digital Content and Mastery Learning Chris Carr DRAFT

Background Information  UW-Madison-Sec.Education and Biology (2006)  CSU-Long Beach-M.A.-Urban Education: Focus on Critical Pedagogies (2011)

My experiences in education  Starting 6 th year in Education (Fall 2011)  Tiger Woods Learning Center (Anaheim)  Centennial High School (Compton)  CRAHS#11 (Watts) DRAFT

Session Objectives  Understand the needs of digital 21st century learners and how to support their learning.  Observation and reflection on applications of digital content.  Development of Digital Content Toolkits.  Develop a process to create a content-based Interactive Digital Agenda/Whiteboard aligned to 21st century college-readiness objectives/skills and content standards.  Apply digital content resources to provide mastery learning of content standards for students.  Apply skills to analyze standards and instructional guides and develop college-ready aligned activities. DRAFT

Lenses for Today Metacognitive experiences during activities today  Student lens-How would a student experience these activities? Where would they struggle?  Teacher lens-Which of these practices/strategies could you incorporate into your class? What would you do differently? DRAFT

Digital Content and Mastery Learning  Digital Content-multiple tools(videos, animations, audio, images, tutorials) used to meet students’ various learning styles and abilities.  Mastery Learning-variation and differentiation in instruction to support all students’ learning through individualized interventions/personalized learning.

Digital Content and Mastery Learning How does digital content support/facilitate mastery learning of content?  By providing multiple opportunities for personalized learning through self-guided and self-paced learning experiences, and reflective exercises. (Bloom’s Taxonomy)  Differentiated Instruction (Multiple Intelligences)

Started the year…  Students checking in/out laptops  Downloading templates/Microsoft Word documents from google website (biologyballers) and copying into a composition notebook  Little personalization of coursework  Submitting work through (10 weeks into the year)  Teacher as intellectual authority (banking method)  No system for organization of student work DRAFT

Professional growth…  Downloading documents/files from school website, and interacting directly with the content  Editing and customizing own work  Self-guided/paced work with deadlines  Reflective activities  Facilitator of knowledge construction (Constructivist approach)  Students as technology leaders and innovators  Easy to follow organization system for student work

Current Applications of Digital Content  Nearly 100% Digital  Online tutorials, animations, reviews games, articles, and videos.  Web resources-for information (no textbook)  Webquests  Customizable documents for students to interact with  Structured/scaffolded templates and graphic organizers  Website design (Google, Weebly, SMARTtboard Software)  Data/performance-based self-assessments  Interactive Digital Agendas/Whiteboards-allows for self-reflection and monitoring of progess towards mastery. DRAFT

Obstacles in Year 1  Access to computers and internet outside of school  Use of non-academic sites  Parent understanding of Blended Model  Technology failure/system crashes  Battery life (PCs!)  Plagiarism  Navigating web resources (reliability)  Systems not communicating w/each other (Datadirector, Excelsior)

Digital Content Framework (My Thoughts and Guiding Questions)  Which standards are you teaching?  What are the objectives (actions) that students should be mastering?  What technology instructional tools can you use to help students learn this content?  Where are the anticipated areas of struggle for your students? How will you support/scaffold their learning?  How will you assess these assignments or course work? How will students demonstrate mastery of this standard?  How will students reflect on and monitor their own progress? DRAFT

Digital Content Framework (My Thoughts and Guiding Questions) Goals for Standards/Objectives Anticipated Areas of Struggle Differentiated Tech. Instructional Tools Assessment Reflection/Re-teach

Summary Questions:  What are some examples of how digital content can be used in a classroom?  How can digital content be used to support differentiated and mastery learning for students?  Explain the process of designing digital content in your own thoughts.
