Presentation transcript:

Wind power has been used as long as humans have put sails into the wind. Since a long time wind powered machines have ground grain and pumped water. Wind power was widely available and not confined to the banks of fast-flowing streams, or later, requiring sources of fuel. Wind-powered pumps drained the polders of the Netherlands. The use of windmills became widespread use across the Middle East and Central Asia, and later spread to China and India. many Dutch horizontal axle windmills still exist. By 1000 AD, windmills were used to pump seawater for salt-making in China and Sicily.

Some advantages are that wind power is free, it is clean, it is a renewable and sustainable resource, it will become cheaper than fossil fuel in the next few years, the wind turbines are self sufficient, wind prices won’t inflate like today’s gas prices, the land beneath can still be used for farming. Some disadvantages are that the wind is not constant, wind turbines do not produce the same amount of electricity all the time, sometimes there would be a time when there is no electricity at all, the wind turbines are noisy, the huge blades pose a danger to birds, wind turbines cannot be placed near cities because of the noise, and right now the wind power costs more than fossil fuel energy.

Other uses of wind power to pump water and to grind grain. In Northern Europe they used it to grind their flower. In China and Sicily they used the wind turbines to pump water out and take the salt, to use for the salt business. Wind-powered pumps drained the polders of the Netherlands too. Someone named Heron used wind power to play his organ.

Wind power generates electricity by the fans in the front spinning. That would spin the turbine. The turbine spins the electromagnet inside of coils, it can also be done the other way around by spinning the coil around the electromagnet.
