A TTACK ON F RANCE In Spring of 1940, Hitler along with Italy, attacked France. Britain sent troops in support. They were quickly overpowered by Germany and Italy. In 6 weeks, the Axis powers had taken control of France

T HE B ATTLE OF B RITAIN Germany next eyed Great Britain. Germany attacked London and other British cities. Britain gunned down over 2,000 planes. After months of bombing, Hitler gave up his attempt to take Britain, they had held him off.

S TOP AND T HINK Who made up the Axis Powers? Who made up the Allied Powers? What significance did the take-over of France have on Europe? List all 5 territories that Hitler took over after promising Britain he would not.

T HE U.S. M OVES T OWARD W AR FDR fought to end the Neutrality Act. Banned the sale of arms to warring nations. Cash-and-Carry Plan- U.S. could sell arms to the Allies, as long as they paid in cash and picked them up on their own ships. U.S. reinstated military draft in preparation for war. Many people felt we had no choice, but to join the fight.

FDR RUNS FOR A THIRD TERM ! This broke the precedent that was set by George Washington. The Lend-Lease Act- allowed the sale or loan of war materials to any country who could help defend the U.S. The U.S. sent airplanes, tanks, guns, ammo, etc. to Britain for aid.

T HE U.S. AND J APAN U.S. feared Japanese advancement as they continued to take over China. U.S. issued embargo on Japan. Refused to sell them oil and scrap metal until they removed troops from China. This angered Japan, and they began to make plans for a secret attack on the U.S.
