Using the TI 83 Graphing Calculator Molly Riddle Parkview Middle School 8th Grade Subject Mathematics

Description of Lesson Using the TI 83 Graphing Calculator-Solving and Graphing Linear Equations Technology Used Clickers Promethean Board Internet YouTube Videos Graphing Calculators Classroom Website 25 Students Activities Included Students will be shown how to graph each equation, via YouTube video, by creating a table and finding three correct solutions. Students will then explore the following equations with the graphing calculator to gain a better understanding of slope. Post Assessment using Clickers similar to Pre Assessment

Technology Used Capabilities Limitations Clickers-immediate feedback Promethean Board-internet access and extremely interactive Youtube/BrainPop Videos-visual learning Graphing Calculator-display graphs of systems of equations Classroom Website-student-friendly tutorials Limitations Clickers-not visually appealing Promethean Board-one user at a time Youtube/BrainPop Videos-somewhat fast-paced Graphing Calculators-run on batteries Classroom Website-not all have access from home

Supporting Diverse Learners Through the use of video tutorials, peer support, and teacher support, this lesson will support the needs of all learners. I will also encourage students to stay for after school tutoring if additional support is needed. Through the use of the internet via Promethean Board, the latest strategies will be utilized to enhance all student learning. It will be a combination of video tutorials, hands- on use of individual TI-83 graphing calculators, and extra support on my classroom website.

Managing Technology Do not take someone else’s Clicker or Calculator. Treat equipment and the people you are working with or chatting with online with respect. Please, ask permission to print. Leave computer and computer area as it was when you arrived. If a problem is encountered always ask the teacher for help never attempt to "fix" it yourself. Do not take other people’s words are images to use as your own. Cite your references!

Was your lesson effective? As seen on the video, the students were motivated by the YouTube video which was extremely user-friendly for all students. At one point, you can hear the students stating how awesome it was that the calculator actually graphed lines for them. Of course, this was after I had taught them to graph by hand. The students understood what slope and slope-intercept form meant before heading in to graphing of lines on the calculator. I thought this lesson was extremely effective. Every student was engaged and could perform the task being asked of them. The only thing I would like to change is the lack of cooperative learning.

Results

Cooperative Learning There was little to no cooperative learning that occurred during this lesson. I thought it would be more valuable and beneficial for each student to explore the TI-83 Calculator on their own. In future lessons, once I know all students have a good grasp on the functions of the TI-83, then I will pull more cooperative group work into the process.

Technology as a Productivity Tool What technology do you use as a productivity tool? Promethean Planet/Clickers and PowerSchool/TI-83 Graphing Calculator How do you use this technology? I use the graphs created by Promethean Planet to quickly view student understanding. I use PowerSchool to find class averages and to denote those classes who are surpassing others and those who need more work on certain unit(s). I used the calculator as a quick observation tool. I could quickly see how was catching on and those who needed the extra support.

Technology as a Research Tool Technology for Distance Learning Technology as a Research Tool I researched many videos to find the right one that would go at a good pace for all my Algebra students. Watching several videos, it also reminded me to use best practices. Students/parents can use my classroom website to support learning. Students/parents can also access PowerSchool from outside the school.

Technology Set up Projector mounted in ceiling & connected to desktop. Computer set up on a network. Clickers communicate with desktop through use of ActivHub. Clickers and Calculators are located at back of room as students enter so they can grab quickly. Our IT will maintain any technology within each classroom. I will continue to remind students of correct way to handle Clickers and calculators for long use.

Teaching with Technology Standards I feel teaching to the technology standards helps teachers and students stay focused on goals. My lesson complied with current educational best practices because every piece of technology was extremely user- friendly. This lesson was differentiated so all students felt success.

LEGAL & ETHICAL COMPUTER USE How does your lesson abide by copyright laws? Throughout the year, students are instructed how to legally and ethically utilize computers and the Promethean Board when accessing the internet. Since they are in 8th grade, most of the students are aware of legal and ethical uses of computers, but need the reminder of the consequences for not using correctly. How are you sure that your students are following ethical and legal guidelines when using technology? It is easy to ensure when they are utilizing the Promethean Board because it is projected in front of entire class. I have used Synchronize several times in the computer lab.
