Path C: The Integrated Classroom Lead Teacher: Wendy Freebersyser

Agenda Is student achievement significantly increased when taught Mathematics in a fully integrated technological classroom? What are the student benefits of learning in a fully integrated technological classroom? What does a fully integrated technological classroom look like? What type of training is necessary to effectively teach in a fully integrated classroom? Where do we go from here? Questions

Is student achievement significantly increased when taught Mathematics in a fully integrated technological classroom? Define success. Measures of success: Student engagement Testimonials Student surveys’ CWC teacher feedback Availability to the student—the extended classroom.

What are the student benefits of learning in a fully integrated technological classroom? Students will meet the Technology standards set by the state and district The abstract becomes concrete. The learning is in the hands of each student. The technology allows individualized learning: Immediate feedback for student and teacher A voice for every student Assessment for learning The classroom and teacher available from home, lab or with a substitute teacher

What does a fully integrated technological classroom look like? Demonstrations of the daily classroom: Smartboard technologies Online integration: Quia Teacher website Online assessment—examview Netsupport—teaching in the lab environment TI-Navigator Benefits Activity Center Quick Poll Capture Class analysis Other benefits

TI-Navigator Features Summary For teachers and students Instantly assess student understanding with the TI-Navigator system. Designed to work with TI graphing calculators, the TI-Navigator system provides wireless communication between students' TI graphing calculators and the teacher's PC.

Benefits For the teacher, attain a whole new level of interactive learning means more engaged students. For administrators, the TI-Navigator system enables real-time formative assessment, supporting research- based instructional strategies, leading to improvements in student achievement. For the district, Multi-Purchase Offer Receive free professional development Receive free professional development

Activity Center Facilitate an engaging, collaborative learning environment Activity Center allows students to contribute real-time to a shared workspace that's projected to the class*. Students work collaboratively by contributing a point, equation or list, and generating classroom discussion. Exploring core concepts in this engaging manner helps promote deeper understanding. Generate more collaborative discussion and, ultimately, higher student achievement.

Quick Poll Feature Get real-time feedback and instantly assess student understanding. Immediately gauge student comprehension and areas in need of reinforcement with the Quick Poll feature. Get answers from every student anonymously, allowing freedom to answer without fear of failure while giving a voice to all students. Identify and correct common mistakes as they occur and, if necessary, adjust lessons on-the-fly.

Capture Feature Monitor students' work to ensure they are on track and on task. Instantly view screen shots of all your students' work using Screen Capture. Track students' level of understanding and quickly assess whether the lesson needs to be modified.

Class Analysis Immediately shows student results on assignments, quizzes and tests, so teachers know right away who's "got it" and who needs additional help. Automatic grading means immediate feedback for students and more time for teachers to spend on lesson planning.

Other Benefits of the TI Navigator Quickly send data or Apps to students Save time by sending class materials like data lists, lecture notes, collected data and tests directly from the teacher's PC to students' TI calculators. Transferring files is easy!

What type of training is necessary to effectively teach in a fully integrated classroom? Change in teaching methodology. PDC: Full immersion staff development opportunities like TI convention. Must have hands on experience with time to play. Release time to work with CWC teachers to develop lessons and learn technologies. Time and resources on PDC days to develop lessons and share with other teachers—Critical Friends model. Experts Tom Swoboda Building technology teacher District network to keep us up-to-date on new technologies— Communication is key to district success. Utilize PDC time to bring together teachers to keep moving forward and learning.

Where do we go from here? Create a budget to acquire technologies for teachers. Basic classroom Advanced classroom Cutting-edge classroom Put the PDC into the hands of the teacher leaders to allow the cutting-edge to continue to move forward—Critical friends model Create learning opportunities Parkway needs to host conferences etc and get back into the forefront in this area. Create partnerships as we have in the past with universities and corporations like TI. Teachers can get advanced training through TI—Parkway could host and fund these opportunities. Technology teachers in each building.

Basic Classroom Teacher laptop Smartboard Classroom set of TI 84 graphing calculators Method for online assessment: Lab setting- Examview Quia Web-based projects Access to the expert.

Advanced Classroom Teacher laptop Smartboard Classroom set of TI 84 graphing calculators Method for online assessment: TI Navigator or equivalent Lap-top carts for lab environment in the classroom Lab setting- Examview Quia Web-based projects Teacher created website Access to the expert.

Cutting-Edge Classroom Teacher laptop Smartboard Classroom set of TI 84 graphing calculators Method for online assessment: TI Navigator or equivalent Student laptops with wireless projection units Wireless internet connection for: Netsupport features:  Online student discussion groups  Complete student teacher interaction  Easy teacher control and supervision over student use Examview Quia, etc Web-based projects Teacher created website with online tutoring, daily notes, classroom discussions etc. Funding and training for new advancements Assistants to the building expert.

Initial Path vs What really happened! Implement technology into my classroom over the next two years so that the technology becomes as necessary to my students and classroom as a pencil, paper and textbook are. The students will gain mastery over the TI graphing calculator, several types of software, the smartboard and have extensive opportunities brought into the classroom via the internet. This mastery over the technology will insure all of my students will reach the NET standards as well as the enhancement of their mathematics knowledge. The focus of technology shifted to teaching methodology. The teacher gained mastery of technologies and utilizes the appropriate mix of technologies to do the following: Get students engaged Get feedback from students Individualize learning for every student Put the learning in the hands of the individual student. Students do not gain a mastery over the technology but do gain a better understanding of abstract higher level mathematical concepts, gain a confidence in mathematics and achieve success with the curriculum at hand.

Questions Thank you for attending today. I appreciate the opportunities that I have been given to explore new ideas. Parkway has always allowed its teachers the freedom to teach their own way, run their own classroom and provided the opportunities for individual teachers to grow and follow their own path. The beauty of the district can be a limitation, as we look forward each teacher will have his/her own vision. The true mission of the administrative team is to allow for that individuality but continue to move teachers forward in a common direction. The administrative team must walk the line—allowing teachers individuality while providing equal opportunities for every student.
