Understanding Health and Wellness ~ an introduction of basic terms ~ “Today is the only guarantee you get.”

HEALTH: ● the state of being free from illness or disease. ● a person’s mental or physical condition. What picture do you imagine when you hear the term “health?” Draw that image in your class notes. It will help you remember the definition.

WELLNESS: ● a state of well-being. ● the quality of one’s life. “Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.” This clip might help you understand the term “process.”

WELLNESS WHEEL: Consists of 7 Dimensions - S - social P - physical E - emotional C - career I - intellectual E - environmental S - spiritual What it looks like when you have all the dimensions working together

PHYSICAL WELLNESS: The process of making choices to create flexible, cardiovascular fit, energetic and strong bodies. The choices we make are related to: exercise, nutrition, rest & sleep, stress management, injury, illness, & the uses of drugs.

DEVELOPING AEROBIC CAPACITY: Key Criteria: ● constant motion of arms & legs that engages lungs and heart. ● times per week. ● heart rate must reach beats per minute for 30 minutes. Ideal: (ages 6-17) should have 60 min/day of aerobic exercise.
