Career Development Overview Workshop

Are you ready??  Organize yourself  Stay organized  Set a goal  Review your progress  Follow Up  There is a lot of information out there, and searching for a new job is a time commitment, so be patient!

Before you Begin  Cyber-cleanse (use the Grandma test)  Professional address and outgoing voic message  Have 3+ references available and ready to give you a strong recommendation  Create / Improve LinkedIn profile  Attach papers you’ve written or projects you’ve worked on  Find Alumni, Request Recommendations, join groups, find events, contribute to discussions

Build your materials/documents  Resume – follow a template  Reverse Chronological Order  Cover Letter – customize per company/opportunity  Some roles may require writing samples or presentations

Create Marketing Plan  Think about your IMMEDIATE career goal and ULTIMATE career goal  As you search, WHERE do you want to be geographically  Would you like to work at a LARGE company or SMALL company  Which industries are you interested in? Which are growing?

Execute plan / Job Searching  Create a list of target companies  Ask a mentor where they can see you  Talk to friends and family  Look at lists of “Best Places to Work”  Have proactive conversations with recruiters/agencies  Go to Career Fairs and Career Workshops Marketing Plan Handout

What’s your story?  You will repeatedly be explaining yourself  Interviewing - Tell Me about Yourself  Resume Summary or Cover Letter  Networking – Introducing yourself  Establish your focus and how you’ll communicate it

Incorporate – (for MS BAPM) What is Business Analytics?  Anticipate a follow up question and be ready to give a high-level explanation in your own words  Something like… “Business Analytics is the study of data through analysis to help an organization make better business decisions.”

Practice your “Elevator Pitch”  “I’m a (1 st or 2 nd year) graduate student at UConn studying _____. Prior to business school I (talk about your professional experience) and I’m interested in pursuing a career in….”

Applying to Jobs  Quality trumps quantity!  Don’t just spam your resume  Create Saved Searches for updates on job postings  Post your resume on job search sites  (SEO) Be searchable! Wordle.net

Interviewing  Are you ready?  Practice, have a mock interview with a friend  Practice Sample Questions (Straight forward ones and behavioral interview questions)

Keep track  Track your data and activity  Stay Organized  What are you learning?  What’s working?  What’s holding you up?  Lessons learned?

Follow Up  Communication and Follow Up is so important–  Thank you Notes after interviews to get next steps and decisions  Follow Up if given a referral or new piece of information
