Volleyball

History of Volleyball Volleyball started out as a result of businessmen looking for a game to play that is not a vigorous that basketball. The sport was designed to be played indoors and was a non-contact sport.

History of Volleyball Cont. 1895 William Morgan combined elements of baseball, basketball, tennis, and handball and called the new sport Mintoette. Later an observer of the sport said to the creator that the game looked like people volleying the ball back and forth, so Mr. Morgan decided that the game would be called volleyball as that was a more descriptive name.

History of Volleyball Cont. 1896 The first volleyball game was played in Springfield Massachusetts.

History of Volleyball Cont. 1916 The Philippine players founded a new concept for the sport. The Philippine players would pass the ball to one another very high in the air on their side of the net. The players found that when the ball was passed high next to the net another player was able to hit the ball downward toward the opposing team. The name they gave to the shot was a “bomberino” and is now what we call a spike or a kill.

History of Volleyball Cont. 1920 The rule of three hits per side was introduced to the sport. 1964 The Olympic committee added six person volleyball to the games. 1996 The Olympic committee added 2 person beach volleyball to the games.

Rally Side out There are 2 types of scoring in Volleyball

SIDEOUT SCORING Only the serving team may score a point, except in the deciding game when rally-point scoring is used. When the receiving team wins a rally, it gains the right to serve (also scoring a point in the deciding game), and its players rotate one position clockwise. Rotation ensures that players play at both the net and the back zone of the court.

SIDEOUT SCORING CONT… A team wins a game by scoring 15 points with a two-point advantage and wins the match by winning the best of three or five games. In the event of a 16-16 tie, the team scoring the 17th point wins a non-deciding game with only a one-point advantage. In a deciding game there is no point cap.

RALLY POINT SCORING The team winning a rally scores a point (Rally Point System). When the receiving team wins a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve, and its players rotate one position clockwise. The best of three or best of five games will win matches. Each non-deciding game will be won by the team that first scores 25 points with a minimum two-point advantage (no scoring cap).

RALLY POINT SCORING CONT… If there is a deciding game, it will be won by the team that first scores 15 points with a minimum two-point advantage (no scoring cap).

Rules

Volleyball Rules A match shall consist of best two-out-of-three games. Third game shall be decided by rally scoring. Service and sides will be determined prior to the start of the match by a coin toss. Service and side will then alternate for the second and third games. Games will be played to 15 points; a team must win by two points to be credited with the win. There is no scoring cap. Players must rotate clockwise prior to their team's serve.

Volleyball Rules CONT… Extra players or substitutions may rotate in during the game. This must occur prior to a team's serve. A player may not hit the ball more than once in succession. The ball must be hit legally. No holding, carrying, lifting, or throwing is permitted. The ball is considered ‘in' if it strikes one of the court lines.

Volleyball Rules CONT… A player cannot touch; reach over or under the net to hit the ball. Players cannot touch the net while the ball is in play. Hanging on the net at any time is not allowed. A player may step on the centerline, but may not step across it.

Volleyball Rules CONT… No more than three touches may be made per team before the ball is returned over the net. A block at the net is not considered a touch. The penalty for breaking a rule is a point or side out, depending upon which team commits the violation. A net serve results in a side out. A serve may be overhand or underhand as long as it is not punched, shoved, or thrown.

Volleyball Rules CONT… Blocking a serve is illegal. Back row hitting is allowed as long as the hitter leaves the ground behind the ten foot line or does not leave the ground at all.

Playing Positions

Setter "Quarterback" of the team - The setter is responsible for playing the ball on the second contact in every play. He/she will set to the hitters for the offensive attack. Regardless of the rotational position of the setter, the setter must move into position near the net at center court as soon as the ball is contacted. Qualities of a good setter: Quick feet - Good ball control - Consistent - Accurate - Leader - Team Strategist

Outside Hitter (strong side) Hits from the Left Front Position on the court. Blocks weak side hits and moves to assist the middle hitter on blocking middle hits. There are defensive responsibilities. Once the outside hitter is sure the ball is not approaching this position, he/she moves off the court into position to await a set from the setter. Qualities of a good Outside Hitter: Explosive Jumper - Quick Arm Swing

Weak-side Hitter (off setter) Hits and blocks from the Right Front Position on the court. Performs same responsibilities as the strong side hitter. However, the weak-side hitter is usually responsible for setting the ball if the setter plays the first ball over the net. Qualities of a good Weak-side hitter: Strong blocker - Agile - Flexible - Ability to adjust

Middle Hitter Hits and blocks from the Middle Front Position on the court. This position requires good footwork and endurance. The middle hitter is responsible for blocking opponent's middle hits, AND assisting in the blocking of outside and offside hits. Qualities of a good Middle Hitter: Good lateral movement - Shoulder flexibility - Endurance

Right, Middle, and Left Back Row These players job are to return serves to the setter and get the ball to the setter in a rally.

3 Hits per Side It is to your advantage to hit the ball 3 times on your side. When your team sets up the play the hitter has a much better chance of ending the point with a powerful spike.

Basic Offensive Strategy The basic offensive strategy in volleyball is Pass - Set - Spike. The first ball over the net is passed to a position close to the net, just right of center court. The setter will be in this location to receive the pass and set the ball to one of the teams attackers (hitters).

Rotational Position Rotational Position is the area on the court where the player must be when the ball is served (from either team). This is determined by the line-up at the beginning of the game, which dictates the order of servers for the entire game. A new line-up is submitted for each game in a match, so positions may be changed after each game. These rotational positions are numbered on the court.

Rotation Students will enter on the back row. The first position will be back row on the left side. Next moving to middle and finally to the serve on the back row. Following a loss of serve, the next position will be front row in the right side then to the middle. The last position will be on the left. Once the rotation has been made as another player enters on the back row, the player will exit the game.
