A Predicate Adjective is similar to a Predicate Noun in that it always comes after a Linking Verb. The Predicate Adjective is always an Adjective. The predicate adjective describes/modifies the subject. Since a Linking Verb acts like an equals sign, Subject = Predicate Adjective You will not have a predicate noun and a predicate adjective next to each other!

Examples 1. María is smart. 2. Last year, she seemed really shy. 3. In class her voice sounds really soft but confident. 4. However, on the basketball court she is a monster. 5. She is awfully talented playing basketball. 6. Some day she will be a famous person.

How to Recognize the Predicate Adjective When labeling Subject Complements: First identify the Prepositional Phrases Identify the Subject Find the Verb. Tell whether the verb is an action verb or linking verb. If it is a Linking Verb, what word is the Subject being linked to? Tell whether the word is a noun or adjective.

Practice 1. My favorite baseball team is the Yankees. 2. They were awesome last year. 3. This year they seem distracted. 4. Next year, they will be victorious. 5. Hopefully, they are the best team again. 6. They should win their division at least.
