2 What is a Verb?  A word or group of words that expresses action or doing.

3 Main Verb  The most important word(s) in a verb phrase.  A verb phrase includes two or more words.

4 Helping Verb  Works with the main verb to tell about an action. Am Is Are Was Were Will Has Have Had Does Do Did Could Would Should

5 Action Verbs  Tells what the subject of a sentence does, did, or will do.

6 Linking Verb  Connects the subject of a sentence to a noun, a pronoun, or an adjective in the predicate that renames or describes the subject. Appear Become Feel Grow Look Seem Taste Forms of Be Be Is Are Was Were

7 Guided Review Identify the verb phrase in each sentence. Write the main verb. 1. Evelyn was working hard in class. 2. She could perform turns and jumps gracefully. Identify each main verb and helping verb. 1.She could never stop her ballet lessons. 2. By the age of fourteen, Evelyn was facing a decision.

8 Guided Review Identify the action verb or linking verb. 1. They brought some bread at a convenience store. 2. The cat in the street was orange. Draw a line under each linking verb.
