Why do you think Santa Claus was on the poster?  It is to act as a connection between the adverb clause and Santa Claus.  Just as Santa Claus brings gifts that make us smile, an effective adverb clause is a gift writers give to readers.  It makes it easier for the reader to understand how the ideas go together.
