2 WARM UP 1. TAKE OUT your JOURNAL. 2. TURN to your PARTNER AND TELL him/her your PERSONAL NARRATIVE STORY from beginning to end. 1. Don’t leave anything out. 2. This will prepare you for getting your ideas down on paper. 3. Time is up in 5 minutes—DON’T WASTE IT!

3 WRITER’S WORKSHOP PHASE 1 ZERO VOICE LEVEL 1. Read your PERSONAL NARRATIVE KERNEL PLANNING SHEET from yesterday. MINUTES—WRITE YOUR ROUGH DRAFT WITHOUT STOPPING. 2. FOR THE NEXT 30 MINUTES—WRITE YOUR ROUGH DRAFT WITHOUT STOPPING. 3. Leave the left page of your journal empty—write on the RIGHT PAGE. (See the board.)

4 WRITER’S WORKSHOP PHASE 2 1. READ WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN SO FAR. REVISE THESE AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT. 2. IF YOU ARE FINISHED WITH YOUR STORY, REVISE THESE AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT. 1. SHARPEN the images in the ATTENTION GETTER. (FIRST SENTENCE.) Give the reader details to see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something important. 2. Next slide…

5 WRITER’S WORKSHOP PHASE 2, CONT. 2. REREAD THE CONCLUSION. 2. REWRITE THE REFLECTIVE CONCLUSION 2. REWRITE THE REFLECTIVE CONCLUSION SO THAT YOU HAVE A MEANINGFUL LESSON THAT YOU LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCE. 2. THE READER MUST understand what the deeper importance of this experiences was for you. 2. Why does this experience mean so much to you? 3. What did you learn about yourself? 4. What did you learn about others? 5. What did you learn about the world? 2. EX: I realize now that it isn’t what you do on vacation that is so important. It’s about getting to know and appreciate the people you are with because when vacation is over, your connection will be stronger. The memory will bind you together in a special way. Next slide…

6 WRITER’S WORKSHOP, PHASE 2, cont. 3. Highlight or box 3 PLAIN, ORDINARY VERBS/ACTIONS that you can ENERGIZE with a more VIVID ACTION/VERB.  EX: RUN—SPRINT/DASH/RUSH, etc.  Use the synonym feature in the DICTIONARY to find replacement ENERGIZED VERBS. 4. REREAD YOUR PERSONAL NARRATIVE. Make changes to improve images and ideas. 5. Conference with Mrs. Dragoo. (Raise your hand and reread your Rough Draft AGAIN while you are waiting.)

7 WRITER’S WORKSHOP, PHASE 3  CONFERENCE with a PARTNER  YOU MUST HAVE MY APPROVAL FOR the previous steps first.  PARTNERS share drafts.  Give your partner 3 SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT. Write these on the left page of the journal. Draw arrows to where to place them in the draft.  Ex:  Add images to your Attention getter right here.  Make your REFLECTIVE CONCLUSION more meaningful. What deeper lesson did you learn as a result.  Energize this verb. Let me help you find a cooler synonym.
