1 The art of styling sentences
Pattern Three

2 Compound Sentence With Explanatory Statement
(clauses separated by a colon) General Statement (idea): specific statement (example) (an independent clause) (an independent clause)

3 Explanation This pattern is exactly like patterns 1 and 2 in structure
It is different in content The colon signals the reader that something important or explanatory will follow The second clause explains or expands on the first

4 When to Use This Pattern
Use it when you want the second part to explain the first part To give an example or provide answer to implied question The first statement is general and needs more explanation

5 Examples The bouquet was special: it contained the roses she loved best. Remember Yogi Berra’s advice: it ain’t over till it’s over. To be successful, your paper must have a public purpose: it should be written to enlighten others beside yourself.

6 Exercises Complete each with an independent clause. If the first clause is missing, provide a general statement. If the second is missing, add an explanation. 1. ___________________: the students all got A’s on their papers. 2. The dot-com companies have changed the work week: __________________________. 3. I finally developed my own Web page: _____________________________. 4. The firefighter took a terrible risk: _________________________________. 5. ________________________________: we got to experience Times Square, see a Broadway show, and go to the top of the Empire State Building.
