The colon signals the reader that something important or explanatory will follow
The second clause explains or expands on the first

4. When to Use This Pattern
Use it when you want the second part to explain the first part
To give an example or provide answer to implied question
The first statement is general and needs more explanation

The bouquet was special: it contained the roses she loved best.

To be successful, your paper must have a public purpose: it should be written to enlighten others beside yourself.
