Leading cause of death. $500 billion in health care expenditures and related expenses in 2010 alone. The leading controllable risk factors for heart disease are: High blood pressure High cholesterol Cigarette smoking Diabetes Poor diet and physical inactivity Overweight and obesity List of Different Heart Disease: Angina Heart Failure Atrial FibrillationHeart Rhythm Problems CardiomyopathyHeart Valve Problems High Blood PressureRheumatic Fever High Cholesterol Infective Endocarditis DiabetesHeart Attack Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually. Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Goal of healthy people 2020 “Improve cardiovascular health and quality of life through prevention, detection, and treatment of risk factors for heart attack; early identification and treatment of heart attacks; and prevention of repeat cardiovascular events.”

Why is Heart disease a problem? High blood pressure affects approximately 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. more than half of Americans with high blood pressure do not have it under control. Factors such as stress & anger. About 90% of American adults exceed their recommendation for sodium intake. Lack of exercise and diet. Major cause of disability Not enough Americans go to screenings Most of the problems involved are controllable & can be corrected!

The Nation’s Objectives New measures & tools. Set more goals, standards, & guidelines to being more physically active. Reduce the proportion of persons in the population with hypertension Reduce the proportion of adults & children with hypertension. Increase awareness of the symptoms of and how to respond to a heart attack. Reduce the mean total blood cholesterol levels.

the U.S MEETING THE Objectives CDC’s Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention: Health departments in 41 states receive funding. The policies & education to promote heart-healthy living & working conditions. Million Hearts: Services to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by Clinical & community strategies in place to prevent heart disease across the nation. American Heart Association: The programs targeted at helping people identify & adopt healthier lifestyles. They are working towards reducing deaths from heart diseases by 20% by the year 2020.

How can the nation further address this problem? Reward for staying physically active. Make a law for lowering health insurance. As an incentive for going to the gym. Free Bi-monthly screenings at the local pharmacy places.
