2 Cardiovascular disease
Atherosclerosis and hypertension Atherosclerosis – a condition in which artery walls thicken as a result of a buildup of fatty materials like cholesterol Affects coronary arteries and create heart attacks – where blood flow to part of the heart is blocked and cells die. Treatment includes a low fat diet, exercise, medication

3 Hypertension High blood pressure Usually higher than 140/90
Makes the heart work harder to pump blood, no serious symptoms so “silent killer” Hypertension and atherosclerosis are closely related - arteries narrow and blood pressure increases Should limit sodium intake

4 How to keep healthy Exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet low in fats, cholesterol, and sodium, avoid smoking
