Southern Colonies Maryland 1630’s --founded by Lord Baltimore --religious freedom for Catholics --tobacco Georgia 1730s --debtor’s colony --buffer between colonies & Spanish Florida

New England Colonies 1620 – Pilgrims found Plymouth Colony --Seeking religious freedom for themselves --Do not tolerate other religious groups --forces people to go to new colonies --Mayflower Compact – example of self-government in America —Boston, Massachusetts is founded --establish town meetings to decide local government laws

New England Colonies Rhode Island 1630s – Founded by Roger Williams – Williams kicked out of Massachusetts – Rhode Island established religious freedom (can practice any religion)

The Middle Colonies New York – originally belonged to the Dutch – Called New Netherlands/New Amsterdam – Diverse population – Colony focused on trade – 1664—New Netherlands taken over by English, renamed New York

The Middle Colonies Pennsylvania 1680s --founded by William Penn, a Quaker --Quakers were persecuted in England --established religious freedom --good relations with Native Americans

The Mayflower Compact, 1620 (excerpt) We….having undertaken…., a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Officers, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience. With a partner, write down some key words that could help you understand what the Mayflower Compact says. In your own words, but also using evidence from the document, explain the purpose of the Mayflower Compact.
