1 Unit 1 Day 2 (New England) Quote: “All great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.” - William Bradford Essential Question: What factors allowed the colonial settlements to thrive independently from Great Britain? 2 New England 1620, a group of colonists started the colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts. These colonists followed the religious beliefs of the Puritans and were seeking religious freedom.

3 1628, more settlers arrived to the north of Plymouth and formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The colonies will continue to grow in this area with the arrival of more Puritans from England.

4 The colonies in the New England area will quickly develop an economy based on shipbuilding, fishing, fur trading and lumber.

5 Between 1642 and 1651 England goes through a Civil War
Between 1642 and 1651 England goes through a Civil War. Without a stable government in England the colonies are left to govern themselves. When the wars finally end migration to the colonies greatly increases.

6 1651, the English Parliament passed the Navigation Acts
1651, the English Parliament passed the Navigation Acts. This law forbid the colonies from trading any goods with anyone except England.

8 Mayflower Compact In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620.
