EMBARCADERO10 Lighting Design for Outdoor Office Space Project 3 ARC 363 Environmental Building System II Haoyu Wang & Fadak Dashti

Purpose Analysis the daylight condition for the covered outdoor office space, and design appropriate lighting system, create a pleasant and interesting experience with lighting.

Outdoor Office Space The outdoor flex office space is designed to be garden-like working space, it is also a fun, relaxing and interactive space for people to work, sit and enjoy the view and relax. We want to let our electric lighting working with natural lighting and geometric patterns of garden in order to achieve a mesmerizing effect. The light openings will work on filtering and controlling any sunlight coming into the flex office to create the desired atmosphere. Rendering taken before we start working on lighting

Working Process Week 1: Working with Daylight Skylight openings and hollowed screen The top roof above the outdoor space is spanning 50 ft on the short side, in case of making the north side brighter, we added 5 pieces of skylight openings with glass cover. We also used hollowed screen as ceiling, so we can hide major lighting fixtures above the screen.

Working Process Week 1: Working with Daylight Analyze the daylight condition in different month & daytime.

Working Process Week 2: Working with Major lights Since we are using a hollowed screen as ceiling, all of our major lighting fixtures are hidden by the screen on top, so we are just using normal fluorescent tubes for efficiency. Because they are simple, cheap and durable. Rendering taken on week 2, for early testing.

Working Process Week 2: Working with Major lights Advantages of Fluorescent lighting: 1. Fluorescent lighting is 66% cheaper than regular lighting while providing the same brightness. When you consider that a quarter of any home's electrical consumption is done through light bulbs, the savings can add up considerably. 2. Fluorescent bulbs last longer. On average, a bulb or tube has a lifespan six times longer than a regular incandescent bulb. They tend to burn less after continuous use, and can be turn on and off without being afraid of burning it. 3. The lights do not give off heat, which makes them great for area lightning and for areas where additional heat can cause equipment to malfunction or bother the users. 6 pieces of 4’ tubes used in each set, totally 5 sets in the space.

Working Process Week 2: Working with Major lights Detail of suspended screen with a set of fluorescent lighting fixture.

Working Process Week 3: Working with Decorative lights For decorative lights, our main idea is to follow the pattern of the benches and green space with lights. We put floor mounted lights on ground and also in green spaces to follow the pattern. In addition, we put LED banding lights mounted in concrete benches. These lights could change color and make the space more interesting.
