Lighting In Interior Design

1. Facts about Lighting….. Lighting manipulates the mood or feeling of any interior Lighting can alter responses from the mind and body Lighting is considered artistic: decorative, dramatic UL seal: Underwriters Laboratories assures the fixtures are made according to safety guidelines. Light is measures by: Footcandles, Lumens and Watts and Footlamberts Lights vary in wattage according to their energy output.

2. Lighting Terms Contrast: Difference between light and dark Diffusion: Spreading out of light to avoid glare Glare: High level of brightness is not shielded Intensity: The degree or amount of light Reflection: The return of light from a surface Cool light: gives of a bluish cast Warm light: gives of an orange-yellow cast Portable lighting: Can be moved to need location Architectural lighting: Part of house plans, built-in and installed into the home.

Sources of light in a building….. Natural Incandescent Halogen Florescent Combustion

3. Natural Light First light source to consider. Sunlight that enters the house through windows, doors, skylights, etc. Makes colors richer and brighter Healthy, cheerful light for living North or East exposure—Cool, bluish cast South or West exsposure—Warm, orange tones Natural glare requires interior shading or window treatments

4. Incandescent Light Light bulb most people use. Produced by heating a tungsten filament until it glows. Produces heat, is costly and wears out quickly. Burns about 700-1000 hours. Can be colored: holiday lights

Halogen Lighting Filament is surrounded by halogen gas and the reaction creates light. Lamp is kept brighter than incandescent bulbs. Light is more similar to that of sunlight. Lasts longer than incandescent bulbs. Controls light beam to make it excellent for accent lighting, or spot light.

Fluorescent Lighting The bulb converts ultraviolet light to visible light energy Used for general lighting in areas where tasks are performed but task lighting is would be impractical. Generally shadowless light Initially cost more Lasts up to ten times longer than an incandescent bulb. Use less electricity and produce no damaging heat. Not as homey and comfortable. Colored Florescent Light: Neon signs

Combustion Lighting Combustable: Flammable Firelight, lanterns, and candlelight Light that has movement Creates a mood or feeling of coziness, romance,

5. Categories of Lighting General Overall lighting, shines downward Can get bland, monotonous Task Lighting a small space Light for a specific task; reading, cooking, eating, grooming, studying. Can be portable or built-in Accent/Decorative Used to draw attention to specific areas or objects. Adds interest or drama

6. Lighting Fixtures Ceiling Luminaries: Lighting fixtures attached to the ceiling. Wall Luminaries: Lighting fixtures mounted to the wall. Keeps clutter off of surfaces but are permanent and can take the space pictures might have. Floor & Table Lamps: portable lighting often chosen for aesthetic features

Ceiling fixtures Track Lighting Recessed or Adjustable Lighting

Luminous Panels Flush or Surface Mounted

Suspended Lighting Soffit Lighting

Wall Fixtures Sconces Brackets

Valance, Cove, Wall Panels

Floor & Table (Portable) Lighting Lamps Accessories

7. Planning Interior/Exterior Lighting You should be able to… Light your way as you go room to room Switch lights on/off at each doorway Turn on stairway lighting as you go up or down stairs Light the entrance as you enter Control outdoor lighting from the house Control outside lighting from inside the house Meet all building codes Avoid a circuit overload

Electronic Symbols on a blueprint….

8. Lighting in the Future: energy efficiency is the buzzword. Electronic sensors for movement Timing devices Programmable Units Remotes More combination lighting Lighting Design career path
