1 HOUSING DECISIONS p. 347-349 p. 344-349 How are these mounted?
Define each of these types of lighting. General lighting Direct Indirect Local (Task) lighting Accent lighting Structural lighting Nonstructural lighting p How are these mounted? Which way do they direct light? Valance lighting Bracket lighting Cornice lighting Cove lighting Recessed down lights Surface mounted down lights Wall washers Soffit lighting Luminous ceilings Strip lighting (not in book) Track lighting

2 OBJECTIVE 4.05: COMPARE various forms of lighting.

3 Invention of the Light Bulb

4 Lighting has various functions. Lighting can:
Make a task easier to complete Contribute to safety Add beauty and set a mood

5 Lighting sources

6 Natural light comes from natural sources, such as the sun or a flame.
Colors are more true in natural lighting.

7 ARTIFICIAL LIGHT includes:
Incandescent Light Fluorescent Light Fiber Optics Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

8 This light tends to be warm & flattering.
INCANDESCENT LIGHTING is produced by electricity passing through a filament in a glass bulb. This light tends to be warm & flattering.

9 Costs more than incandescent, but lasts a long time.
FLUORESCENT LIGHT is produced when chemicals inside a glass tube transform ultraviolet rays. Costs more than incandescent, but lasts a long time.

10 Fluorescent light comes in colors; warm-white and cool-white

11 Cool-white light is very efficient, blends well with sunlight, and makes colors look good
Warm-white light is cost efficient but is not flattering to some colors

12 CFLs save energy and last for about 9000 hours.
COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS (CFLs) are fluorescent lights that screw into regular incandescent light sockets. CFLs save energy and last for about 9000 hours.

13

14 FIBER OPTIC light flows through hair-like strands of glass
FIBER OPTIC light flows through hair-like strands of glass. Does not give off any heat.

15 LIGHT EMITING DIODES (LEDs) are made of crystals on silicon chips about the size of a grain of salt.

17 Categories of Lighting

18 Lighting 1. General Direct Indirect 2. Local (Task) 3. Accent

19 1. General lighting provides a uniform level of lighting throughout the room.

20 DIRECT LIGHTING is a type of general lighting.
Direct lighting shines directly toward an object.

21 INDIRECT LIGHTING is also a type of general lighting.
Indirect lighting shines up and reflects off of ceilings and walls.

22 Provides extra light for reading, cooking, sewing, etc.
2. LOCAL or TASK LIGHTING focuses light on an area where it is most needed. Provides extra light for reading, cooking, sewing, etc.

23 3. ACCENT LIGHTING is very bright and is aimed directly on a specific object to create a dramatic effect.

24 Ways to deliver light

25 NONSTURCTURAL LIGHTING is not built in and can be easily moved and changed.

26 STRUCTURAL LIGHTING is built-in and wiring is usually hidden.

27 Valance Lighting: mounted over a window hidden by a valance shines light up and down.

28 BRACKET LIGHTS mounted on a wall light shines up and down.

29 CORNICE LIGHTING mounted near the ceiling shines downward.

30 Cornice lighting over traverse drapery rod

31 COVE LIGHTING mounted near the ceiling directs light upward.

32 RECESSED DOWNLIGHTS (can lights) direct a beam of light from the ceiling downward.

33 SURFACE MOUNTED DOWNLIGHTS are similar to recessed lights, except the “can” is visible.

34 WALL WASHERS spread light over a wall from ceiling to floor.

35 SOFFITT LIGHTING is an enclosed box-like structure with a diffuser at the bottom.

36 LUMINOUS CEILING PANELS are fluorescent tubes placed under plastic panels.

37 TRACK LIGHTING is several light fixtures mounted on a metal strip.

38 STRIP LIGHTS are rows of incandescent bulbs.
