Background Kenya’s population is approximately 38Million, Nairobi City’s population accounts for over 10% of Country’s population (about 3.2 million people); Nairobi is a capital of Kenya, financial & administrative hub of East Africa. The city contributes to about 60% of the Country’s GDP & provides for over 50% of formal employment in the country. Nairobi City is therefore a key focus area as an engine of growth in Kenya for sustainable development.

Proposed Nairobi City County Energy Policy Starting point for the Nairobi County is on going preparation of the Integrated Urban Development Master Plan which recognizes the need for the county to formulate an energy policy to guide development of the sector. Being developed alongside the Integrated Urban Development Master plan with support from UN-Habitat Energy Policy expected to be completed this year Policy seeks to ensure affordable, sustainable & reliable supply of energy to meet the county’s development needs. 5
