HOW TO STUDY FOR SUCCESS Courtesy of: BEVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELORS

INTRODUCTION (why?) SOME STUDENTS MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO STUDY. STUDY SKILLS TO HELP YOU IMPROVE YOUR TEST/QUIZ GRADES. GOOD GRADES = ACADEMIC SUCCESS

STEP I: ORGANIZATION COME PREPARED FOR CLASS – binder/notebook, pencils, homework WRITE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS DOWN IN YOUR AGENDA! REVIEW AGENDA BEFORE DISMISSAL SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO TAKE HOME!!!!!!! GET ORGANIZED – locker, homework folders, binders, pencil pouch.

STEP II: MAKE A PLAN FOR STUDYING SELECT A CONSISTENT PLACE TO STUDY (kitchen table, favorite chair, etc.) NOT YOUR BED!!!!! SCHEDULE A TIME TO STUDY (as soon as you get home, right after you have something to eat, break it up into blocks, etc.) DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! SOME NEED TOTAL QUIET WHEN STUDYING, OTHERS MAY STUDY WELL WITH SOFT MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND.

STEP III: HOW TO STUDY - SOME SUGGESTIONS DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND MAKE HOMEWORK YOUR PRIORITY! REWRITE NOTES MAKE FLASH CARDS FOR YOUR VOCABULARY & STUDY EVERY NIGHT. COME UP WITH TWO QUESTIONS FROM YOUR NOTES EVERYDAY

STUDYING SUGGESTIONS (cont.) HIGHLIGHT WORDS AND PLACE A QUESTION MARK BY THE THINGS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. REVIEW CLASSROOM MATERIALS AT HOME DAILY. CREATE YOUR OWN STUDY GUIDE.

MORE STUDYING SUGGESTIONS PARTICIPATE IN FORMAL STUDY GROUPS. HAVE PARENTS/FAMILY MEMBERS QUIZ YOU AND ASSIST WITH HOMEWORK. UNDERSTAND LEARNING CONTINUES AFTER SCHOOL, ON WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS, AND DURING SUMMER VACATION.

SUMMARY Using a variety of studying techniques will help you succeed in school. Success in school = success in the future. Make academics a priority in your life! You cannot take an elevator to success, you must take the stairs. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!!!!!!!!!!!
