S.C. Bhattacharya Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand An Introduction to the Asian Regional Research Program in Energy, Environment and Climate (ARRPEEC)

Background All parties to UNFCCC have common but differentiated responsibilities. Developing countries are likely to become more involved in global efforts to reduce emissions in the future. Also, global GHG emissions reduction can be achieved at a lower cost through mitigation projects undertaken in developing countries. It is urgent to enhance capacity and preparedness of the developing countries regarding identification and assessment of national GHG mitigation options.

The Asian Regional Research Programme in Energy, Environment and Climate (ARRPEEC) is funded by the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida) and co-ordinated by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). ARRPEEC is organised as a regional network involving a number of national research institutes (NRIs) from several countries of Asia. The first, second and third phases of ARRPEEC started in 1995, 1999 and 2002 respectively.

ARRPEEC Phase II Overview ARRPEEC II was formulated by AIT and collaborating National Research Institutes (NRIs) and approved by Sida in ARRPEEC II was executed during Jan1999- Dec 2001 Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) –overall programme co-ordination –regional synthesis/research –research leadership, coordination and management Countries involved: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam 23 National Research Institutes –Carried out national level research

To mobilize and enhance the capacity of national research institutes participating in the programme with regard to conducting research on energy-environment-climate issues. To produce policy oriented research results for the mitigation of greenhouse gases and other hazardous emissions. To disseminate the results of the programme among concerned groups, particularly policy personnel. Program objectives
