3. 3 Origin and Organizational Status The Climate Technology Initiative was originally established in 1995 at the First Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change by a group of OECD countries and the European Commission. CTI was formed to support the objective of the Framework Convention by fostering international cooperation to promote the more rapid development and diffusion of climate-friendly and environmentally sound technologies and practices. In July of 2003, the CTI was reformed under an Implementing Agreement of the International Energy Agency.

4. 4 Since its formation, CTI has undertaken a broad range of cooperative activities in partnership with developing and transition countries and other international bodies. advanced the cause of technology transfer under the Framework Convention through a variety of technology enhancing and capacity building activities.

5. 5 CTI works closely with: IEA and UNFCCC Secretariats the Expert Group on Technology Transfer(EGTT)/UNFCCC relevant IEA Implementing Agreements – Representative of DSM IA attended March 2005 meeting of CTI ExCo in London other international organizations or initiatives (WB, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, etc.) Academia and Research Communities Business and Financial Sectors

Technology Needs Assessments Capacity building for TNAs; Technical assistance to countries carrying out needs assessments; Development of methodological approaches to TNAs in partnership with relevant international organizations; Exchange of experiences about the use and development of successful approaches to conducting TNAs under varying circumstances; and, Facilitating interaction between governments, agencies, and relevant international and other organizations on TNAs.

8. 8 2004 TNA Activities Continued collaboration with UNDP and UNFCCC in the development and dissemination of technology needs assessment methodologies  Building on outcomes from CTI workshop on technology needs assessment and technology information for the Caribbean region during October 2003, provided technical input to section on adaptation of TNA methodology handbook. Worked with UNFCCC, UNDP, UNEP, and country representatives to explore more effective ways to integrate TNA outcomes with other information resources for broader international dissemination

9. 9 2. Seminars and Symposia in support of the UNFCCC process, in order to facilitate the diffusion of environmentally sound technologies and practices. Stakeholders’ involvement, particularly, industry sector, is actively sought. Close collaboration with international partners, including WB, UNIDO, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC Secretariat.

10. 10 Seminars in 2004 CTI/Industry Joint Seminar on Technology Diffusion in ASEAN and Small Island States of the Pacific Region - held in Jakarta, Indonesia, 4-5 February 2004 CTI Seminar on Technology Transfer and Diffusion in India – held in New Delhi, India, 11-12 March 2004, in cooperation with the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

11. 11 Seminars in 2004 - continued CTI/industry Joint Seminar on Technology Diffusion in Eastern Europe and Central Asia – held in Vienna, Austria, 28-29 October 2004, in collaboration with UNIDO.

Implementation Activities facilitates implementation activities identified during the technology needs assessment process through a variety of actions, including:  Identifying priority clean energy technology sectors  Implementing targeted activities in selected priority sectors  Evaluating activities, and disseminating lessons learned  Developing a strategy for establishing the necessary enabling environment for technology transfer

13. 13 Implementation Activities in 2004 Sponsored study by Kumasi Institute for Technology and Environment of the social and poverty impact of energy interventions on the rural communities of Ghana. Continued EGTT Experts Exchange program. Collaborated with EGTT, Natural Resources Canada, UNFCCC, the European Commission and others to organize and conduct a workshop on innovation options to finance the development and transfer of technologies.

14. 14 4. Training Courses Training courses are organized in collaboration with relevant international organizations, typically on a regional basis, with a focus on the special requirements and circumstances of the target countries in the region.

16. 16 5. Information Dissemination Facilitate information dissemination among governments, industry, academia and relevant international and other organizations. The CTI provides support for UNFCCC- organized seminars and workshops, designed to better inform participants on technology transfer. The CTI conducts side events at UNFCCC events to share experiences and lessons learned from CTI-supported activities.

17. 17 Side Events at UNFCCC Meetings 2004  20 th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies in Bonn, Germany, 18 June 2004 – shared outcomes from recent capacity building activities and key messages from participants. Speakers included Chair of the Expert Group on Technology Transfer  10 th Conference of the Parties in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 10 December 2004 – Active event entitled Climate Friendly Technologies: The Role of Government, Business, and the Finance Sector
