on.cpf.ca 2. Ministry of Education and School School Board Approved Sites The Ministry of Education in Ontario creates the curriculum outlining the expectations of what is to be taught in all subject areas of each grade. It is up to school boards, and individual schools and teachers to decide which materials will be used to cover each topic in the curriculum to meet the student outcomes expected by the ministry. MINISTRY DEVELOPPED SUPPORT Ontario Curriculum Documents OERB – Ontario Educational Resource Bank SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED SITES Available through school board / school websites

on.cpf.ca OERB – Ministry of Education Access through More than resources & interactive activities in English and French, many created by teachers! Organized by topic, grade, curriculum expectations, learning style, etc… 25

on.cpf.ca OERB – continued Search tips: Use “Browse by Curriculum”, select “grade” and “subject” Try a few activities in English first to get used to the way things are set up. Do NOT select by “strand” or “French language” unless necessary as this greatly limits options. Kids love “Interactive Learning” under “Resource Filter Types” on the left side panel. Once you are comfortable, try activities in French by clicking on “French” near the top right corner of the screen. 26

on.cpf.ca School & School Board Online Resources There are many school boards in Ontario, each spending their funding in ways they feel are most appropriate to their situation. Some have chosen to subscribe to a variety of online learning resources which they make available to their students. Check with your school librarian or school board or school’s website. Look for labels as ‘digital’ or ‘online resources’, ‘virtual library’, ‘homework help’ or even just ‘links’ in the ‘Student’, ‘Parent’, ‘Student Resources’ or ‘Parent Resources’ section of the website. Some of these resources will require a password, which you can get from your librarian Examples: Avon Maitland District School Board Toronto District School Board

on.cpf.ca Learn 360 – Great Videos! (also accessible through the OERB) Access through the TDSB Libraries website or directly through BROWSE BY: “Subject Area”, “Grade Level”, and/or “Media Format” Search tips: Choose your preferred subject area and grade level Kids love “Full Videos” Video length listed below the video thumbnail

on.cpf.ca 3. Public Libraries & e-books Check your library website for these popular e-book providers: Overdrive ebooks & eAudiobooks select “eBooks francais” (over 500 titles) “Livres audio francais” (26 titles) Tumble Book Library has 40 titles in French Select “Language Learning”

on.cpf.ca 4. Other useful sites ZUT! - for FSL learners in the UK with many different types of activities on a wide variety of topics at different levels, geared towards students older students (grade 4 and above in Ontario). **No correlation between year and grade, ie. Year 7 ≠ Grade 7 www. wikipedia/fr (not recommended for high school research) Youtube or Google videos - Look for themed videos: short clips, TV shows, and movies Ex. Grade 3 - NATIVE LIFE & EARLY SETTLERS Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, etc…(Check the library)

on.cpf.ca 5. What’s an app and where do I get one? The term "app" is a shortening of the term "application software”, and commonly refers to programs for mobile devices. A mobile app is a computer program designed to run on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. …The explosion in number and variety of apps made discovery a challenge, which in turn led to the creation of a wide range of review, recommendation, and dedicated online app-discovery services. (wikipedia, 2014)

on.cpf.ca Where do you get apps? iTunes - for iPhones Google Play - Android Amazon Appstore - Android Samsung Appstore - Android Windows Store – Android Blackberry World – Blackberry 10 Nokia Store - Nokia 32

on.cpf.ca 6. Great App Review Sites edululu.org Created for parents and teachers, EduLulu is the first public evaluation service for educational apps available in Canada. EduLulu’s evaluations are the work of teams of independent experts, including teachers, parents, ergonomists, and designers. (Under categories choose “Language Skills” and look for apps with ‘f’ or ‘e/f’) Appyfamily.wordpress.com Great little site with only a few apps recommendations, but there is always a free app of the week. (Under ‘Categories’ choose “French”) Don’t forget to look at related or similar apps often listed at the bottom of the purchase page.
