D EFINITION AND O RIGIN Lung Cancer is a cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs or the cells lining the airways. It originates when normal lung cells become abnormal, usually after a series of mutations, and begin to divide out of control. Cancer of the lung was nearly nonexistent in the early 1900's. By the middle of the 20th century, however, an epidemic became apparent throughout the U.S.

L UNG C ANCER S YMPTOMS /S IGNS Up to 25% of people who get lung cancer do not have any symptoms do not have any symptoms when the cancer is found. As the cancer grows they will start having symptoms like: - Coughing - Shortness of Breath - Wheezing - Chest Pains - Shoulder Pains

I S L UNG C ANCER H EREDITARY ? Even though the role of hereditary and lung cancer is not well-known, having a family history of lung cancer does increase the risk of developing lung cancer to some degree.

3 WOW S ! Lung cancer is the third largest killer in the U.S.A. There are two types of lung cancer: extensive and limited. People who don’t smoke can still get lung cancer from second hand smoke.

E XAMPLES OF T REATMENT Even though there are a number of different options for treatment of lung cancer, the main three are surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Newer therapy targets internal radiation and laser surgery.

R OLE OF D IET AND E XERCISE Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods. Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. Limit consumption of red meats. Avoid processed meats. Limit alcoholic drinks. Limit consumption of sodium. Don’t use supplements. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day.

R OLE OF M EDICINE The main medication when you have lung cancer is chemotherapy. It uses powerful medicines to kill the cancer cells inside of your body. It helps control the growth and spread of the cancerous cells.

R OLE OF F AMILY S UPPORT G IVEN Dedicating the time towards visiting your family in the hospital. Picking up new roles in the family, especially if the person who is ill is the main provider for the family. Coping with a potential death. Having to take care of another person.

M ANAGEMENT OF P ROBLEM Short- Term: Most patients use a drug combination with limited stage small cell lung cancer is Cisplatin and Etoposide. Long- Term: Patients are often treated with Cisplatin or Carboplatin in combination with either Etoposide and Irrinotecan.

I MPACT ON THE I NDIVIDUAL /F AMILY Most people informed that they have lung caner die within the first five years.
