Simple Strategies for your UK Job Search Sarah Bowes Assistant Manager HR Career Employment

Agenda Reality Check: UK’s Hiring Statistics Quality vs. Quantity Your Online Application

UK’s Hiring Statistics How many jobs were posted in 2009? How many applications (self- nominations) were received in 2009? How many applicants (self-nominations) were hired in 2009? 1,901 77,855 1,692 (Only 2.17% of all self- nominations result in a hire)

UK’s Hiring Statistics How many hires in 2009 were internal applicants? In 2009 what was the average number of days it took from when the job was posted to when an offer was made? 653 (38% of all hires are already UK employees) 59 days

Quality vs. Quantity It is not a numbers game, however it is a timing game! ◦ All job postings are posted for a minimum of 7 calendar days. ◦ Tips for success:  Schedule at least one day per week to search & apply for positions.  Use “Quick Search” functions  Be open minded, but realistic

Quality vs. Quantity Seek positions that best fit your skills set, experience, and motivation. ◦ Tips for success:  Research the department prior to applying for the position.  Understand minimum requirements/equivalencies.  Always have your application materials ready and updated.

Your Online Application Clearly communicate your skills, knowledge and abilities that make you the best candidate for the position. ◦ Tips for success:  Customize your application – use the job posting to understand what the hiring official is seeking.  Take your time. Don’t rush, make sure you are answering the question appropriately.  Attach a resume and cover letter in appropriate.  Proofread all materials.  Be honest!

Your Online Application Complete and update all application sections. ◦ Common pitfalls with UK’s application:  Not including current position.  Not including job duty details.  Not updating current supervisor information.  Not spending time on the supplemental questions.  Not including a resume and/or cover letter.  Having out-dated reference information.

Your Online Application Make the most of your references. ◦ Tips for success:  Include name, title, organization, address, phone, and for each contact on the application.  Include individuals who can attest to your work habits and qualifications for a particular position (not friends or relatives).  Ask before you use anyone as a reference.  Send them a resume and information regarding the position (job summary).  Let them know where you are in the application/interview process.
