A REVIEW OF THE EXPOSITORY ESSAY
Presentation transcript:

 You need a pencil to write with.

 Objective: We will discuss the elements of an expository essay and review the criteria for a passing score. The teacher will discuss and show an example for the pre-writing graphic organizer in order to assist students in writing our essays on Tuesdays.  Closing Task: I will understand the elements of an expository essay and the criteria for a passing score. I will ask questions about the pre-writing graphic organizer as the teacher goes over the example. I will complete my own pre-writing graphic organizer over a provided prompt in order to assist me when I write my essay on Tuesday.

 Introduction  Hook  General statement about topic  Thesis statement (includes reason 1  Body  Reason 1 ▪ Explanation ▪ Example  Reason 2 ▪ Explanation ▪ Example  Conclusion  Restate thesis  Concluding thought

 The graphic organizer is going to help you plan out your thoughts before you start writing the expository essay.  We are going to go step by step through the worksheet together.  I will be using Lebron James in my example so he is off limits to the class.

 Imagine today you could change places with anyone you would like to be. This person can be real or imaginary, from the past or the present.  Think about someone with whom you would like to change places.  Write an essay that explains why you would like to change places with this person.

 Change places with  Past or present  Dead or alive  Explain why  Restate Prompt in your own words:  Example: Who would you change places with and why?

 Hook (1 sentence) Boring: “I will write my paper about” or “Today I will write…”  General statement about topic (1-2 sentences)  Thesis statement (controlling idea of paper and includes reasons you will explain)

 Can be a surprising fact  Can be a quote  Can be a question  Can be an analogy (Football is like being in a parade)  Can be something humorous

 My example: In 2012 Lebron James was honored by EPSN and received the prestigious award “Sportsman of the Year”.  Now it’s your turn… write a hook sentence about the person you want to change places with on your handout. Hook: _____________________________________ ___________________________________.

 You need to make general statements about your topic after your hook and before moving into your thesis.  The statement needs to provide facts about your topic that relate to what your topic is and what the controlling idea is.

 My example: Lebron James is a small forward and plays for the Miami Heat. He is respected in the professional arena for his athletic abilities and the contributions he’s made to his community.  Now it’s your turn: Write a general statement about your person (1 to 2 sentences) on your handout

 The last sentence in your introduction  Your thesis statement is the controlling idea of your paper.  It address the prompt and explains what will be driving your essay.

 My example: I want to change places with Lebron James because he has great athletic abilities and has the opportunity to give back to his community.  Now it’s your turn write a thesis for your paper about why you want to change places with the person you chose.

In 2012 Lebron James was honored by EPSN and received the prestigious award “Sportsman of the Year”. He is respected in the professional arena for his athletic abilities and the contributions he’s made to his community. I want to change places with Lebron James because he has great athletic abilities and has the opportunity to give back to his community.

 There needs to be a transition from the introduction to the body as the first sentence in the paragraph.  In the remainder of the body paragraph, you need to explain and give examples for the reasons you included in your thesis.  For example: In my thesis, I included great athletic abilities and giving back to his community. I will need to fully explain these reasons in the body.

 A transition word or sentence moves from one topic to another or one paragraph to another.  Examples:  First  Second  Most importantly  Therefore

 You need a pencil to write with.  See me for your expository writing graphic organizer you worked on yesterday.

 Reason#1 : First, I wish to change places with Lebron James because of his athletic abilities.  Explain: Lebron can dunk, receive alley hoops, and storm down the court like a freight train.  Example: On any given night Lebron James can receive an alley hoop from his teammate, Dwayne Wade, and storm past his opponent to make an astounding play on the court.  Now write the first reason of why you wish to change places with the person you chose and give an explanation and example of this reason.

 Reason # 2:More importantly, Lebron James has given back to his community.  Explain: Lebron has given back to his community by starting an educational campaign “I Promise.”  Example: He goes to various students in his community and inspires them to “promise” to complete high school. He has changed the lives of young people and caused many to go to college instead of choosing a life that in nonprofit able. Many of these students are the first members of their families to attend college and this opportunity was made possible by Lebron.

 In your concluding paragraph you need to…  have a transition from your body paragraph to your conclusion.  restate your thesis.  provide a closing thought.

 Therefore,  In conclusion,

Transition word: Therefore Restated thesis: I want to change places with Lebron James because he has great athletic abilities and has the opportunity to give back to his community. Closing thought: Lebron has contributed to the game of basketball and to his community. His contributions teaches us all that you can be famous and humble at the same time.

 You will now use your graphic organizer to write the final draft of your essay.  This is due at the end of the period.  You will write your final copy in pencil on the STAAR composition page.  Make sure you have your name, date, and period at the top of your paper.

 You need to have THREE indented paragraphs.  Introduction, Body, and Paragraph.  Write neatly!  Don’t write below the last line of the composition page.  Don’t skip lines!
