Analyzing songs for poetic value Lyric poetry consists of a poem, such as a sonnet or an ode, that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly, portraying his or her own feeling, state of mind, and perceptions

Lyric Poetry This is the most personal kind of poetry wherein the topics range from anything that appeals to the author. It can be any kind of reflection or revelation based on the author’s experiences. It is a fairly short poem which expresses a personal mood or feeling of the poet. There tends to be a song-like quality in the poem. The most common subjects of lyrical poetry are love and grief.

Analyzing a song What is the mood of the song? How is the mood achieved? (what kinds of words, instruments, etc.) What is the theme? (the message of the song) What emotions is the songwriter trying to express? What lyrics especially move you or what words do you have a connection with? What imagery in this song is especially vivid for you? Are there any symbols? If so, what do they represent? Are there any examples of figurative language?

Narrative Poetry Tells a story and is can be compared to country music. Ex: Mamma mia, Love story (Taylor Swift) Give some other examples of songs that tell stories:

Dramatic Poetry Dramatic poetry refers to verse which is written to be read aloud and performed. Dramatic poetry presents the voice of an imaginary character(s) speaking directly without narration by the author. It refers to any verse written for the stage and the purpose of being performed. Can be compared to musical theatre. Ex: Mama Mia, High school musical, etc.

Analyzing a poem Who is speaking? To whom is he/she speaking? What is the occasion? When is the poem being spoken? Where is the poem being spoken? What do you like/dislike about this poem? What is the storyline of this poem?

Analyzing a poem cont’d What is the central idea? What is the dominant tone/mood of the poem? How is that tone achieved? What happens in the poem? How would you describe the language of the poem? Are there examples of figurative language used? (similes, metaphors, personification etc.)

Analyzing a poem cont’d Is the poem symbolic? Allegorical? Give examples. Does the poet use hyperbole, irony, or understatement in this poem? Give examples. Are there any illusions within the poem? How are they used? Are there meaningful sound repetitions?
