Poetry vs. Prose ProsePoetry Written using ordinary language Written using figurative language Can be any lengthUsually shorter Read for its literal meaning and theme Read for its deeper meaning Ex: novels, short stories, dramas Ex. Ballads, limericks, epics Divided into paragraphs & chapters or acts and scenes Divided into lines and stanzas

5 Poetry Basics Purpose: to entertain Structure: lines & stanzas Lines may not contain punctuation, but a break indicates a completed thought The speaker is the voice or narrator of the poem Poems do not have to rhyme, but rhyme and rhythm create a songlike quality Poetry relies on figurative language and imagery to convey its message

7 Types Ballad Written in lyrical (songlike) form Tells a story using rhyme Often reflects the language of the time in which it was written (dialect) Sometimes written in stanzas of four lines and includes a refrain or chorus Many have been set to music Examples: Davy Crockett, John Henry

8 Types Epic A long, narrative poem Like a novel, except it uses poetic devices (figurative language, imagery) Tells the elaborate story of a hero Ex. Iliad and Odyssey

9 Types Sonnet Consists of 14 lines and a specific rhyme scheme (ABAB ABAB ABAB CC) The last 2 lines are a couplet Couplet Two consecutive lines with the same rhythm and same end- rhyme Ex. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

10 Types Free Verse No rhythm or rhyme in it Cinquain 5 lines with a set number of syllables per line (2, 4, 6, 8, 2) Haiku 3 lines with a set number of syllables per line (5, 7, 5) Limerick 5 lines, rhyme scheme of AABBA
