Leadership Defined  Leadership according to Kevin Cruse with Forbes: …..process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.

Transformational Leadership  This will produce superior leadership performance  Characteristics of Transformational Leadership 1. Charisma: Provide mission and sense of vision, instills pride, gains trust and respect 2. Inspiration: Communicates high expectations, uses symbols to focus on efforts, expresses important purposes in a simple way 3. Intellectual stimulation: promotes intelligence, rationality, and careful problem solving 4. Individualized consideration: gives personal attention – coached and advises.

Transformational Leadership Cont’d  Focus on:  Broadening and elevating the interests of their employees  Generating awareness and acceptance for the purpose and mission of the group  Encourage employees to look beyond their own self-interests for the benefit of the group  Generate power and influence by garnering trust and confidence from their employees

Emotional Intelligence (EI)  A leaders’ emotions will have an immense effect on the emotions of his followers  Job performance can be positively influenced if a leader emulates positive, optimistic feelings  A leader that can better understand the emotions of his followers will be more successful in grasping their problems or concerns  There is a strong correlation between EI and leadership emergence, effectiveness, and behavior

Leadership = Communication Charismatic leadership, human-oriented leadership (transformational leadership) is most effective  Inherently communicative Leader’s should be supportive/assuring in communication  Supportive leaders were found to encourage an environment of knowledge sharing  Assuredness was found to relate to perceived performance, job satisfaction, and commitment to the organization. Increased satisfaction as a product of a more friendly communication style Shown to produce an environment that is more conducive to knowledge sharing

Team Activity: Emotional Intelligence What is Emotional Intelligence?

Team Activity: Emotional Intelligence Think of someone who has created a positive impact in your life  Someone who may have been one of your teachers, or colleagues; possibly a coach, a mentor or more likely a boss  Picture that person in your mind’s eye for a moment. Write a list of one-word adjectives that describes that person. Aim for about 8 to 10.

Team Activity: Emotional Intelligence Emotionally intelligent behavior is an integral part of effective and positive leadership. People are drawn to those demonstrating high EI behaviors. Emotional Intelligence creates a positive followership. People with high EI are listened to because they are respected. Followers feel obliged to please them.
