Colonies could provide wealth, to strengthen England to a world power!

Sir Walter Raleigh Sir Walter Raleigh, inherited a patent to Colonize the New World from his half brother.

Amadas and Barlowe In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh sent Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the New World. The expedition landed near present day Nags Head, N.C. in July.

Amadas and Barlowe (continued) 3 days after landing they were visited by Roanoke Indians Indians took the English to Roanoke Island, the land was fertile and abundant with game and fish

Amadas & Barlowe Go Home Upon their return to England, Amadas & Barlowe impressed the queen with the wonders of America. MANTEO & WANCHESE- two Native Americans also went to England with the crew

The Lane Colony The next year, 1585, the first English colony attempt landed at what is now Ocracoke Island, led by Ralph Lane and Sea Captain, Sir Richard Grenville. m Fort known as Fort Raleigh Ralph Lane

The Lane Colony English first attempt at colonization Returned with Wanchese & Manteo and107 Englishmen Thomas Harriot and John White brought scientific infor back to England. The colony was located at the northeast end of Roanoke Island. This is the natives village.

Who Came? Mostly wealthy men who had never done manual labor. (Servants performed the task) Men who were more interested in looking and finding gold than planting crops. Men who didn’t know how to plan for surviving the winter. Men who were ethno centric towards the Native Americans Men who fought amongst themselves

The Case of the Missing Silver Cup  shortly after arriving at Roanoke Island a silver cup disappeared  Grenville a leader in the colony blamed a group of local Indians & demanded they return the cup  When no cup was produced, Grenville burned the village. vintagelily.com/images/Pot%20belly%20Cup.jpg \ ning-house-sm.jpgwww.texasbeyondhistory.net/tejas/voices/images/bur ning-house-sm.jpg

The Lane Colony (continued) Grenville leaves with the ships to return to England for supplies & Lane took command of the colony. Split them into 3 groups. - 1 group to explore Chesapeake Bay 1 group to remain at Roanoke Island 1 group to explore Albemarle Sound area

Drake was fighting the Spanish in the Atlantic when…. A storm hits the colony just as Drake pulls into port. Lane’s group wants to go home and leave the settlement. They were tired of waiting for Grenville. This was not a success. Natives are now very upset and no longer willing to help. SIR FRANCIS DRAKE TO THE RESCUE!

The Lost Colony, John White Colony The White Colony arrived at Roanoke Island on July 22, led by John White who had been on all 3 trips to Roanoke Island. The colony was made up of 117 men, women and children. 17 were women and 9 were boys.

1 st English Child Born On August 18, 1587, Virginia Dare was the first European Christian to be born in America. Her mother, Eleanor Dare, was the daughter of John White, the governor of what became the “Lost Colony” of RoanokeRoanoke IslandIsland.

“Biting the hand that feeds you” 1. Relations between the Natives & colonists were poor. 2. They depended on the Natives for food but a summer drought and harsh winter left the Natives caring for their own. 3. Conflict between the cultures turned critical in the spring 4. The colony sent John White back to England on August 27 th to get needed supplies.

Spain and England go to War ! Attack of the Spanish Armada in 1588 prevented John White from returning until 1590.

John White FINALLY Returns On August 1590, White returned to Roanoke Island and the colony was gone. White found the letters CRO etched in a tree and found CROATOAN etched in a tree near the entrance to the fort. White found no cross etched in the tree signifying danger The fort was overgrown with grass and weeds.
