1 Roanoke The Lost Colony

2 Sir Walter Raleigh English Granted charter by Queen
to found a colony in the new world. Forced to stay behind when the colony left.

3 The Expedition First expedition by Amadas and Barlowe.
They settled on area off the Outer Banks called Roanoke Island and began exploring the area Returning to England to report their findings, Amadas and Barlowe brought with them two Indians, Manteo and Wanchese. Manteo was a prominent Carolina Algonquian and a member of the ruling family of a Croatoan sub-tribe, whose opinions were respected by Wingina, the local Chief of Roanoke Island.

4 Whose land is it anyway? Amadas and Barlowe followed the example of European explorers since Columbus: ---they claimed the land in the name of their ruler, Queen Elizabeth. How much land they thought they were claiming is uncertain — And it doesn’t seem to have concerned them when, a few days later, they met the brother of the king who already ruled the land they had just claimed. Since he was not a Christian monarch, his claim to the land was irrelevant to them.

5 The Natives-Vital to Survival
Thomas Hariot, with the help of Manteo, interacted with and studied Native American culture. His findings were included in Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588). Friendly at first- John White and Thomas Harriot worked hard to learn from Manteo and to build a good relationship with the natives.

6 First Attempt to Colonize:
Summer of 1585 Manteo and Wanchese return with R. Grenville and R. Lane for England’s first attempt at colonizing. Relations with the natives became strained Aquascogoc (village was sacked and burned over a stolen silver cup) June 1, 1586 Lane launched a surprise attack and killed High Chief Wingina (Pemisapan). Lane abandoned the colony. When the English left on June 18, 1586, Manteo accompanied them to England.

7 Third Trip is a Charm Right?
The third attempt to colonize in 1587 was led by John White and this time included women and children Relations soured again after Wanchese, who took command of Wingina's forces after the chief's death, killed one of the English settlers. Manteo remained a constant ally to the English.

8 Mystery Unsolved White returns to England for supplies
White’s return is delayed 3 years by England’s war with the Spanish On arrival he found the settlement missing. (Cro and Croatan- the only clues) Due to a storm he wasn’t able to search, instead they left.
