3 Attempts To Colonize 1585: Roanoke Island, Sir Richard Grenville, leading the expedition of seven ships and 107 men meant to set up the colony. Ralph Lane: Commander of the colony.

4 1586 Sir Francis Drake Arrives: Taking back 97 survivors along with Tobacco, Corn, and Potatoes; as well as reports, maps, and drawings which would help the English understand the land for future attempts. Grenville arrived only days later. Leaving only 15 men to hold the land for England.

10 Second attempt to colonize
This time Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of 117 colonists including 17 women and 9 boys, led by John White. When they arrived they found no trace of the 15 men and damage to the colony. August 18, 1587: Virginia Dare is born. White Departs on August 27, 1587 to return to England for food and supplies.

12 White returns in 1590 Upon his return John White finds an abandoned colony. Only CRO and CROATOAN were carved on a post and a tree.
