2 Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlow
Amadas and Barlow were the commanders sent by Raleigh July 13, 1584 anchored at Roanoke Spent six weeks gathering information about life in the New World Returned to England in the spring with samples of vegetation and two Native Americans, Manteo and Wanchese Queen Elizabeth was thrilled and knighted Raleigh. The land 600 miles north and south of Roanoke was named Virginia (a reference to Elizabeth the Virgin Queen)

4 The Lane Colony April 9, 1595 – Sir Richard Greenville led a fleet of seven ships back to Roanoke. John White (artist), Thomas Harriot (scientist), and Ralph Lane (commander of the colony) Arrived on June 26, 1585 * Built Fort Raleigh

5 The Lane Colony All was good until …
Conflict between Native Americans and colonists Colony was in peril (dwindling food supply and native conflicts) 1586, Sir Francis Drake, the English “Sea Dog” stopped by and offered assistance. Colonists decided to return to England with Drake, leaving 15 men to hold the region.

6 Achievements of the Lane Colony
97 men survived Introduced England to tobacco, corn, and potato Excellent maps of the area were recorded as well

7 The White Colony May 9, 1580 three ships depart England heading for the Chesapeake Bay area Men, Women, and children will make up the colony Each man will own 500 acres of land. * Never made it to the Chesapeake Bay, ship anchored at Roanoke

9 August 13, 1587, Manteo, member of Croatoan tribe, is christened and becomes Lord of Roanoke
August 18, 1587 – Virginia Dare is born August 27, – John White returns to England (colony needed food and supplies)

10 The Mystery … 1590, White returns to Roanoke three years later (Spain and England were at war) He finds a tree with “CRO” and a post carved with the word “CROATOAN” White was not able to search for the colonists
