England was at war with Spain and needed his ship to defend against an invasion by the Spanish Armada (Navy).

All the colonists had disappeared. The fort was in shambles. Buried chests were dug up and broken open The letters CRO and the word CROATOAN was carved on stockade post and tree. No cross was found (The colonists had been instructed to carve a cross into a tree or post if they were in trouble)

14 List Theories of What Happened to the Lost Colonists.
They were attacked by Spanish. They were attacked by Croatoan Indians. They joined Croatoan Indians. They moved to Croatan Island (Now Hatteras Island) They were all killed by Chief Powhatan (Pocahontas’ father).
