Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences

Simple Sentence A black cat ran across the street. A simple sentence has one complete subject and one complete predicate. A simple sentence can also be called an independent clause. A black cat ran across the street.

Independent Clause An independent clause can stand alone because it ALWAYS has at least one subject and one verb. It is a phrase if it does not have at least one subject and one verb. Example: The kids went to the cafeteria for their lunch.

Compound Sentence A compound sentence contains two or more simple sentences. Each simple sentence is called an independent clause because it can stand alone. Independent clauses may be joined by a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction. Independent clauses may be joined by a semi colon (;).

Compound Sentences with a Comma and a Conjunction The kids played on the playground, and the mothers drank coffee. Most of the students studied for their test, but a few played video games instead.

Compound Sentence Identify the conjunctions in each of the following compound sentences: I went to the store, but my mother stayed home. The shoes are in the closet, and the sweaters are in the drawer. The player kicked the ball so the team won the game. The sun was out, yet it felt very cold outside.

Compound Sentences with a Semicolon The sky was grey; the clouds were full of rain. Most of the students studied for their test; a few played video games instead.

CAREFUL!!! Remember a simple sentence can have a compound subject or a compound predicate. These sentences are still simple sentences. The fat cat and the black dog were good friends. The students ran and played after school.
