Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences

Simple Sentence A black cat ran across the street. A simple sentence has one complete subject and one complete predicate. A simple sentence can also be called an independent clause. A black cat ran across the street.

Independent Clause An independent clause can stand alone because it ALWAYS has at least one subject and one verb. It is a phrase if it does not have at least one subject and one verb. Example: The kids went to the cafeteria for their lunch.

Compound Sentence A compound sentence contains two or more simple sentences. Each simple sentence is called an independent clause because it can stand alone. Independent clauses may be joined by a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction. Independent clauses may be joined by a semi colon (;).
