The Metric System

1.The Metric System a. Standard system used by scientists. b. AKA S.I. (International System of Units) c. Decimal System based on the #10 and multiples of the #10

d. Uses prefixes with base units to indicate what power of 10 should be used with the base unit. Example: Prefix kilo- means 1000, so a kilometer is 1000 meters. e. Used to measure: Length, volume, mass, density, and temperature.

i.Length 1. distance between two points base unit is the meter (m) 2. 1 m = 39.4 inches 3. Tool: ruler or meter stick

ii. Volume 1. amount of space an object takes up 2. base unit is the liter (L) a. used mostly for liquids 3. also can use cubic centimeter (cm³ or cc) a. used with solids and liquids b. 1 cm 3 = 1 mL

4. Tools: a. Liquid or irregular shaped objects i. Graduated Cylinder ii. When measuring use the mL mark at the bottom of the curve or the meniscus. iii. Get eye level and leave the cylinder on the table.

b. Solid Objects i. Use a ruler/meter stick to measure height, length, and width ii. Volume = H x L x W

iii. Mass 1. the amount of matter in an object 2. base unit is a kilogram (kg) 3. Tool: Triple Beam Balance

iv. Density 1. mass per unit volume of a substance 2. density = mass volume 3. Find the mass and volume of a substance and plug into the formula.

4. Units: g/cm3 or g/mL a. Derived unit- a measurement obtained by combining SI units iv. Density cont…

v.Temperature 1. measure of the motion of particles 2. Units: a. Celsius (ºC) i. 0 ºC = Water Freezes ii. 100 ºC = Water Boils b. Kelvin (K) i. 0 K = coldest possible temperature ii. 0 K = -273 ºC iii. AKA: Absolute Zero c. Tool: Thermometer

Conversions for Temperature -Fahrenheit to Celsius 5/9 (ºF – 32) = _____ºC -Celsius to Kelvin ºC = _____ K
