1 Unit 1: Science & Technology Lesson 1: Measurement- A Common Language Essential Questions: Why do scientists use a standard measurement system? What are some SI units of measure?

2 Why do scientists use a standard measurement system? A measurement system based Metric system on the number 10.  A measurement system allows scientists to repeat experiments. A version of the metric system International System of Units that scientists use SI  This allows scientists to compare data and communicate.

3 SI Prefixes SI units are similar to our money units, in which a dime is ten times more than a penny. Determine the example for the SI Prefixes.

4 What are some SI units of measure? The distance from one point Length to another.  The basic unit for length is the meter.  A tool used to measure is a metric ruler.  Meter (softball throw) centimeter/millimeter (paper) kilometer (distance between cities)

5 A measure of the amount of Mass matter in an object  The basic unit for mass is the kilogram  A tool used to measure is a balance  Kilogram (car) grams/milligrams (turtle) A measure of the force of gravityWeight acting on an object  Unlike weight, your mass on the moon is the same as your mass on Earth

6 Compare and Contrast Determine the similarities and differences of mass and weight.

7 The measure of how much Density mass is contained in a given volume. It is made up of two measurements.  The basic unit for density is kilograms per cubic meter A bowling ball and a beach ball have the same volume but different masses. Which object has a greater density?

8  An object will float if it is less dense than the surrounding liquid
