The impact of ICT on Personal Communications For students in year 11 students at Les Quennevais School. The groups I will look at will be: My Family Disabled People

There are other people in my family then me. There is my mum, dad, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. They all use ICT in the form of personal communication. Physically disabled people are my second choice of people. I have chosen to do these because ICT effects them greatly. If the different types of software and peripherals weren't available then it wouldn’t be possible for student that are physically disabled to keep up with other students and their curriculum.

My Family: They all use communication in some form. For example: Use of Mobile phones for text messaging, photo messaging, phoning. This is used by me and both of my brothers to arrange social life's etc. The use of the internet for ing, Yahoo and MSN messenger, Chat rooms. Mainly by me to talk to friends. Telephones. All though these aren’t as important they are still used. They are used by everyone in my family.

Physical Disabled People: Some children have problems with manipulation either because of painful joints this causes the child to be behind in their school work. Blind ( Microphone with voice recognition, types what you say for example ‘Dragon dictate’ ) Deaf (Hearing isn’t an essential with computers, this is an advantage) Dumb (Talking is not a necessary when using ICT although voice conferences aren’t possible for these range of people) It is particularly important for some who find it hard to record schoolwork using every day methods, i.e. handwriting

Mobile Phones The advantages of mobile phones would be quick communication that is portable for my family. Photo messaging, text messaging and recording for fun Emergency Calls for example 999 can easily be called by anyone in the family Work calls can be made to and from the home using mobile phones. Internet The advantages of the internet are that it’s a lot cheaper then text messaging. Homework can be done on the net using various amount of sites for help. MSN messaging and YAHOO messaging is often used in my home to talk to friends rather then phoning Advantages of ICT Developments on Personal Communications for My Family

Software on Computers Using software like ‘Dragon dictate’ where a headphone and microphone is used to speak to the computer and then text is generated on the screen. There is a wide range of software and peripherals available as alternatives to the traditional keyboard and mouse. Microphone with voice recognition, types what you say. Special types of keyboard settings Predictive word processors Touch pads Tracker balls and joysticks Advantages of ICT Developments on Personal Communications for Physical disabled people

Unrestricted Internet Access Censorship undermined by the internet With few controls makes t easier to access files for homework etc. Ease of copying computer files Help with homework Computers replacing people at work reduces the costs Remains competitive in today’s global economy Increased Government Surveillance Criminals can be traced Creators of viruses can be stopped

Mobile Phones The cost – this can add up to quite a considerable amount to run and buy the model. The batteries life is limited, so unless the phone is charged regularly none of the advantages are useful! They can be quite temperamental Internet The connection is NOT free! Need to be basically skilled when using a computer Security – there is a lot of insecure sites and without restrictions people are open to all sorts of information. Chat rooms Spamming and viruses when using Disadvantages of ICT Developments on Personal Communications for My Family

Isolation Cost Deaf- cannot use mobile phones Cannot use ICT to its full potential Moral, ethical and social issues

Unrestricted Internet Access Very few controls Racist Sexist Ease of copying computer files It is very easy to copy computer files It is illegal People think because of this others are becoming criminals. Computers are replacing people at work People are out of jobs Is this right? Increased Government Surveillance Every sent is recorded This is an invasion of privacy

Social Issues 1.‘Information rich and information poor’ Computers aren’t cheap, not everyone can’t afford this. 2.‘The internet’s changing how we interact’ The growth of and home shopping worries some people. 3. ‘Over-reliance on technology’ some people think mobile phones make it harder to become independent. 4. ‘Impact on literacy’ some people think playing games effects how much people read. 5. ‘Faster pace of life’ it’s said that computers increase stress levels.

Future Developments Mobile Phones Smaller Faster Colour More interactive Internet Faster Bigger More world use To Aid Physically Disabled People More peripherals A wider range of software Gadgets for deaf and blind people etc. The future of technology Maybe eventually one day every business will be on the internet The effect Physically Disabled people – Make it easier for them, or it could advance so much that not enough technology is made to allow the disabled to keep up.
