Moving From Engaging to Serving Alumni Through Brown’s Alumni Career Programs Presented by Eve Ornstedt Director, Career & Admission Programs June 21, 2011

Why is it important? The global economic situation mandates that we do as much as is reasonably possible to support alumni impacted by the ongoing crises. Survey of alumni repeatedly supports desire for expanded career programs for all alumni. Survey of alumni interviewers indicates that a growing number of applicants ask career related questions during their alumni interviews.

What has Brown Offered Historically? 2006: ACCess, Career Week 2007: BRUnet Launched 2008: Navigator Development Begins, WLP Grows 2009: Navigator Launched 2010: New Job Board Provider, BRUnet Challenge Achieved 2011: Executive/Career Coaching Program & Webinar Series

How have we responded to alumni? June 1, 2009 launched online suite of career tools for alumni Deliberate in developing valuable resource for every career stage, for every employment “status” 30,000+ users in first 18 mos. Continuing to develop and add to programs

Navigator’s Four Core Components Assessment/Coaching Research Job Board Networks

Key Accomplishments in FY11 Achieving the BRUnet Challenge (5/1/10 – 12/31/10) Growing the Navigator brand Expanding the scope of service by launching the Executive/Career Coaching Referral Program

Key Goals in FY12 Build out the alumni community surrounding the Navigator (possible Navigator News enewsletter, profiles, storytelling) Roll out 9 part webinar series featuring alumni providers in Coaching Program (Sept 2011) Test various media outlets to build/grow awareness of BAA’s career tools and programs (possibilities include tweeting jobs, virtual career fairs) Serve as lead University entity in engaging alumni in the internship programs, such as Brown in Boston Internship Program pilot (Summer 2011)

How are Alumni Served & Engaged Through Alumni Career Programs? How can alumni be served by these programs? Job Board averages 400+ postings by alumni and Brown friends BRUnet’s alumni include broad span of industries, levels, etc LinkedIn groups include thousands of other alumni How can alumni contribute to the growth of these programs? Have a job to share? Post it on the Job Board. Aren’t yet a BRUnet member? Become one. Interested in sharing opportunities with students? Mentor through the WLP (alumnae), Brown Degree Days, Internships

What Have We Learned So Far? Some systems run themselves, some need close administrative support. Promoting, promoting, promoting is essential if you want continued growth. Keeping up with social media pathways can be overwhelming, though this is not a problem unique to career programs! Alumni – at every career stage - value career programs, and value being served and engaged through this means.

Let’s take a tour!
