WARM UP: Turn your Endocrine System Homework to the homework basket. Get an article from the front stool. Read the article & answer the questions on the back.

SINCE WE KNOW the brain controls all activity and emotions, IT IS IMPLIED THAT the brain has total control of our bodies. SINCE WE KNOW all impulses must pass through the spinal cord, IT IS IMPLIED THAT a spinal cord injury would keep some of the impulses from reaching the brain. SINCE WE KNOW blood supplies the brain with food and oxygen and rids the brain cells of waste keeping the cells alive, IT IS IMPLIED THAT if no blood was getting to our brains, the cells would not stay alive. SINCE WE KNOW our brains control all emotions such as love, hate, fear and happiness, IT IS IMPLIED THAT our brains control sadness.

NERVOUS SYSTEM

Major Functions: Uses electric impulses to control all of the body’s processes, including involuntary and voluntary actions. Involuntary – breathing, digesting, heart rate Voluntary – walking, thinking, feeling Sense the environment Smell, taste, touch, hear, see

The nervous system helps respond to stimuli: Any change inside or outside the body Example: An insect zooms toward your eye Stimulus = insect zooming toward you Response = blinking

What is the basic unit of structure and function in the nervous system? NEURONS = nerve cells You will need to know: 3 parts of a neuron 3 types of neurons

Parts of a Neuron: Cell Body Largest part that controls activities of the cell Dendrites Thread-like structures that carry messages to the cell body Axon Tail-like structure that carries messages away from the cell body

3 Types of Neurons: Sensory Neurons Sense changes and carry messages to your brain and spinal cord Interneurons Translate the message and connect sensory to motor neurons Motor Neurons Receive messages from the brain and make movements

Nerve Impulse: The path of a message in the nervous system In the form of electrical and chemical signals There are tiny gaps between neurons called SYNAPSES Nerve impulses have to jump over the gaps

Divisions of the Nervous System: CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Made of the brain and spinal cord Network of nerves branching out from the brain and spinal cord Link between the central nervous system and the rest of the body

Central Nervous System: BRAIN Main control center 3 main parts Cerebrum Largest part that controls voluntary activities Cerebellum Coordinates muscle action and maintains balance Medulla Connects brain to the spinal cord and controls involuntary actions

Central Nervous System: SPINAL CORD Protected by the vertebrae Connects the brain to the rest of the nervous system Makes reflexes possible  responses to stimuli

HOW ARE THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM AND NERVOUS SYSTEM RELATED? THE ARE BOTH CONTROL SYSTEMS!
