HW # 32-Read the Can You Feel The Difference lab; make a hypothesis. Warm up You smell a delicious aroma. You walk into the kitchen and see a bag of popcorn in the microwave. You hear some kernels still popping. Then you think to yourself, “Snack time!” Which body systems enabled you to smell, walk, see, hear, and think? How did each system play a part in your response? Week 9, Day One

Warm up Response --

Homework Response/Check Completed Respiratory System notes.

Nervous System Notes Nerve Cell Diagram

5 If you are viewing this at home… By the end of this discussion, you should be able to answer: What are the functions of the nervous system? What is the structure of a neuron and what kinds of neurons are found in the body? How do nerve impulses travel from one neuron to another? What are the structures and functions of the central nervous system? What are the structures and functions of the peripheral nervous system? What is a reflex? What are the two ways in which the nervous system can be injured?

A system that controls all of the activities of the body. The nervous system is made of: The brain The spinal cord The senses The nerves

The nervous system also allows you to react to a stimulus. A stimulus is a change in the environment. Example: A hot stove Or… tripping over a rock

Your reactions are automatic. Automatic means that you do not have to think about your reactions. Example: If a bug flies by your eye, you will blink.

An organ that controls your emotions, your thoughts, and every movement you make.

11 Has 3 parts: *cerebrum- for movement, senses, speech, thought **cerebellum- actions of muscles and maintain balance ***brain stem- involuntary actions (breathing/heart rate)

The Central Nervous System is made of the brain and the spinal cord. The Central Nervous System controls everything in the body.

The Peripheral Nervous System is made of the nerves and the sense organs. (voluntary & involuntary) Nerves Sense organs

Messages carried throughout the body by nerves.

Cell body: functional portion Dendrites: short extensions that receive signals Axon: long extension that transmits impulses away (to synapse)

16 Synapse- junction where one neuron can transfer an impulse to another Axon tips release chemicals that carry the impulse across the gap

Peripheral Nervous System 17 2 parts: Somatic- voluntary (using a fork) Autonomic- involuntary (blood vessel diameter)

* The peripheral nervous system is made of the nerves and the sense organs. Ear Eye Skin Nerves Tongue

Sense organs carry messages about the environment to the central nervous system.

* The peripheral nervous system also controls the body’s activities that you don’t think about. * Such as: your small intestine, your breathing, and your heartbeat. controls

* An automatic reaction that happens without thinking about it. * A reflex happens quickly in less than a second.

22 What is the function of each: -Cerebrum- largest part, control movement, senses, speech, abstract thought -Cerebellum- coordinates actions of muscles & balance -Brain Stem- involuntary actions (breathing & heart rate)
