Bell ringer Where can you find a sensory neuron? Interneuron? Motor neuron?

Divisions of the Nervous System The Central Nervous Systems is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. The Peripheral nervous system is made up of all of the nerves outside the central nervous system.

Peripheral Nervous System The system that helps control the rest of the body consists of 43 main pairs of nerves. 12 originate in the brain. The other 31 begin in the spinal cord. Spinal nerves are like a two lane highway it contains both sensory and motor neurons.

Types of Nerves(neurons) The nerves are made from bundles of neurons or nerve cells. There are 3 types of neurons: Sensory neurons: nerves that are stimulated by the environment (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) Interneuron – neurons in the spinal cord and brain that send the signals to the brain regions in control of an activity Motor neurons – neurons that connect to muscle and glands that respond to the stimulus

How an impulse is Transferred A stimulus occurs and the sensory neurons send electrical impulses to the brain. The brain signals and sends electrical impulses to the motor neurons which trigger a contraction in the arm to reach for the water. This type of reaction is called a somatic nervous system response. It means it is VOLUNTARY!

Nerve impulses are carried along synapse. A synapse is a gap between the axon and the next structure. The impulses are transfers with the release of chemicals that cross the gap.

Somatic system – voluntary control of movement and reaction Autonomic – involuntary control of movement and reaction Reflexes are autonomic responses. The feeling of pain is a somatic response. Reflexes are signals that are given off by the spinal nerves. They react faster than the brain. This helps keep us from injury and is part of the Fight or Flight response.
