MISSION OVERVIEW Primary Objective: Prove that a glider-like vehicle is a practical way to return a payload to Earth Secondary Objective: Use a micro video camera to create a video of the high altitude environment around the BalloonSat from the point of view of the glider before, during, and after detachment Why? (Shuttle Decommissioned, need a vehicle to return payloads to the Earth.)

SATELLITE STRUCTURAL TESTS Whip Test – Satellite remained attached to the string throughout the test. Drop Test – Satellite survived a 3 story fall onto the street below, a small indent in the corner was the only damage taken Stair Test – Satellite was propelled down the DLC stairs, structure remained intact Simulated payload remained intact \/\/ \/\/ \/\/

RELEASE MECHANISM TESTING Programming Designed the timing system on the Arduino to output a voltage at exactly 76 minutes (used pin 13 on the board for testing) Electrical Connected the Arduino to a MOSFET electrical component to switch off the power going to the magnet when the Arduino outputs its voltage. Combined Used the Arduino to power the magnet, found that there wasn’t enough force to hold the glider up. Added a pulley system to solve this issue

COLD AND HOBO TESTS Cold Test: Heater’s batteries ran out at some point during the test Camera ceased to function Arduino released magnet at exactly 76 minutes even without the heater Temperature dropped to roughly 25 degrees Celsius HOBO ran throughout the test, but gave inaccurate results on the internal temperature

FLIGHT TEST RESULTS: GLIDER DESIGN III

PREDICTION ON FLIGHT RESULT Prediction One: Glider will remain attached for exactly 76 minutes, release, and free fall towards the earth. At roughly 9 km. air resistance will begin to slow the fall of the craft, eventually creating enough lift to stabilize the vehicle Our BalloonSat will continue to 30 km where the balloon will burst before it too free falls toward the earth. The parachute will slow the descent of the satellite after this Prediction Two: Glider releases prematurely Prediction Three: Our flight will fall somewhere between these two extremes, not working perfectly but still completing the mission it was designed to do.
