2 Mission Overview OBJECTIVE: To design, build, and launch a BalloonSat which will test two types of power generation systems (solar panels and propellers) under flight conditions. The mission will also collect data on humidity, temperature and take pictures during flight. EXPECTED DISCOVERIES: Amount of power generated by solar panels under flight conditions Amount of power generated by propellers under flight conditions Which power generation system is most effective at various altitudes and conditions

3 Mission Overview (cont.) HYPOTHESIS The solar panels will provide more overall power generation but during certain flight periods the propeller will be more efficient

4 Mission Overview (cont.) PURPOSE Gain knowledge of solar panel and propeller power generation in different atmospheric conditions Compare data from the power generation systems to discover which system is more effective overall and at different points during flight Learn about renewable energy sources for flights within Earth's atmosphere Generate information that future BalloonSats may utilize in selecting power systems

16 Expected Results gain information about the efficiency of power generation under different conditions We expect... o Solar panels will generate more power overall o From launch to 12 km- propellers will generate more power o 12 km to burst- solar panels will generate more power o Burst to parachute deployment- solar panels will continue to generate efficiently with some sporadic generation from the propellers o Parachute deployment to landing- solar panels and propellers will generate power on a comparable level Data shall be analyzed post-landing to determine which power generation system is actually most efficient under varying flight environments
