Hang Seven Critical Design Review Sierra Williams, Lucas Migliorini, Abby Caballero, Chase Goodman, Paul Smith, Becca Lidvall, Ethan Hollenbach, Nikhil Desai October 18th, 2012

Mission Overview Objective Measuring Gamma Radiation as Altitude Increases Testing the effectiveness of aluminum and carbon fiber on reducing radiation levels

Why do this? Determine the trend in gamma radiation on earth, as the altitude increases Test the effectiveness of materials currently used in aircrafts Discover the altitude where the radiation can be detrimental to human health

Hypothesis We predict the gamma radiation will raise linearly as the altitude increases The aluminum and carbon fiber will both reduce radiation levels to a non-lethal amount The aluminum will block more radiation than the carbon fiber

Requirements LevelNumberRequirements 01Payload must ascend to an altitude of 30 kilometers via balloon 02Payload must store and collect data from our sensors 03The payload's mass must not exceed 1.025kg 04The internal temperature of the payload must not drop below -10° celsius 05The payload must be able to hold all electronics and sensors 06The payload must contain a heater 07The payload must contain a power source 08The payload must be constructed solely of foam core 09The payload must be ready for launch by 1 December 2012 010 The payload must contain three working geiger counters 011The team and project must obey all safety precautions

Requirements Cont. LevelNumberRequirements 11The geiger counters must be able to accurately measure gamma radiation 12The payload will store and record data from the Geiger counters to an SD card 13 The payload must survive the ascent and descent and all the forces associated with both 14The payload will contain aluminum and carbon fiber testing tubes 15Connect the geiger counter to the Arduino microcontroller 16Program the Arduino microcontroller to collect information 17Use aluminum to shield one Geiger counter form radiation 18Use carbon fiber to shield one Geiger counter form radiation 19Use one Geiger counter as a control for radiation measurement 110Calibrate home-made Geiger counters to an industry standard Geiger counter LevelNumberRequirements 21Take the measurements from the Geiger counters and plot them looking for trends

Foam core Hexagonal Centripetal force Equipment Arduino Uno To tell the machinery in the Balloon Sat what to do Collection of Data Control of Geiger counter and Camera Storage of Data Sensors for humidity, condensation, and temperature Camera Canon SD780 to capture the majestic earth in pictures and videos Design Structure Arduino

Biggest Worries Hardware -Sensors failure -Electrical failure -Overheating -Faulty programming -Geiger counters not working Structural -The G’s after the balloon pop -Integrity of the structure -Condensation inside the -BalloonSat -Temperature

Test Plan Payload Test Plan Structural tests Hardware test Geiger counter tests - Physics Department Payload Tests Completed Camera hardware test Arduino sensor tests (humidity, temperature, pressure, accelerometer) Tests that will be preformed and completion date Whip test 10/27/12 Drop test 10/27/12 Kick test 10/27/12 Hardware tests 11/11/12 Power tests 11/11/12 Cold Test 11/12/12

Predicted Results The Geiger counter that is not protected will read substantially higher radiation than the protected Geiger counters The Geiger counter that is not protected will reach a lethal level The Geiger counter with an aluminum cover will read less gamma radiation than the Geiger counter with carbon fiber cover
