The Classical Period: 1750-1825

What was life like during the Classical period? It was a time of ‘new ideas and new ways of thinking’. More people were leaving the countryside and settling in the cities. More people also began attending concerts, which were usually held outdoors, in parks etc.

What was music like during the Classical period? It was planned very precisely and used specific forms (plans) to write this music. Two of these forms were; sonata form (for solo instrument and piano accompaniment) and symphonic (for orchestra) More music was written for orchestra It had neat, elegant melodies.

So Who composed Classical Music? While there are many Classical composers, three of the most famous during (the period and today) were Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Joseph Hadyn. These three composers wrote music using the popular Classical forms; sonata form and symphonic form. The also wrote string quartets and operas.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Mozart was born in 1750 in Salzberg, Austria. He began playing the piano at 2yrs of age and also played the violin. By the time he was five he could read and write music. He toured the royal courts of Europe as a teenager.

What are some of his compositions? Some of Mozarts most famous works are: ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ (A little night music) Symphony No.40 in G minor The Marriage of Figaro Piano Concerto No.21 in C major
